The platypus, by far, is Australia's weirdest animal. With its duck bill, beaver tail, venomous spurs and the fact it is the only mammal known to man that lays eggs as a means of reproduction, it would have certainly confused European Settlers.
Although unique to Australia and relatively common, it is still rather rare to spot these amazing aquatic mammals in the wild.
These school holidays Healesville Sanctuary are running 'Tales From Platypus Creek,' an interactive platypus spectacular. The kids have the chance to watch the platypus as it glides through the water and as it plays and interacts with the keepers. This gives the kids the opportunity to see these incredible creatures up close and in a habitat as close to the real thing as one can get.
For those who are unfamiliar, Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia's best native wildlife zoos. It is also recognised throughout the world as the leader in Platypus care and research, having been the first organisation to have bred and raised a platypus in captivity.
The sanctuary also houses over 200 species of native fauna, from koalas and kangaroos right through to dingoes and raptors. It truly is an immersive and uniquely Australian zoological experience. Set in the picturesque surrounds of the Yarra Valley (approx an hours drive east of Melbourne) it's a perfect location for a day trip.
Entry throughout the school holidays and on weekends, is free for children under 16 years. Adults are $26.10 (or $20.20 if you are entitled to a concession.)
Starting from January 10th, the 'Tales from Platypus Creek' shows are free with general admission and run twice daily, at 11.30 am and 2 pm respectively. The zoo does request that you arrive fifteen minutes prior to ensure you get a seat, as seating is rather limited in the amphitheatre.
