Talbot Farmers Market - A Hidden Gem
If you fancy escaping the crowds in the city to seek out some delicious local produce, and don't mind a blast of (very) fresh air, look no further than quaint Talbot
and it's very popular Farmers Market
. Talbot is a tiny little town, roughly 90 minutes drive from Melbourne CBD. In the 1850s, Talbot was a thriving town, peopled by gold prospectors who came to seek their fortune in the goldfields. Today it's a sleepy backwater with historic buildings and a intriguing hint of yesteryear.
The Talbot Market is held year round, on the third Sunday of the month, from 9.00am to 1.00pm. There are well over 100 stalls set up along Scandinavian Crescent and the surrounding streets. If you like your fruit and veg fresh and tasty, this is the place to shop. Besides organic fruit and veg, you can sample and buy wine, pasta, liquorice, cakes, cheeses, chocolate, honey and more.
And it's not only food on offer. There are locally produced arts and crafts, jewellery, woodwork and plants to tempt your wallet. The kids can spend time in the mobile animal farm ($4 per child) or bouncing on the jumping castle ($3 per child). If you're really keen, take home a live chicken or peacock or your pick of the goats! Live produce is no stranger to Talbot Farmers Market.
When all the retail therapy gets too much, pull up a seat for some lunch. The choices are endless; organic soup, sausage rolls, scones with jam and cream, cakes, pies, pizzas made to order, spring rolls and dumplings. The hard part is choosing what to have.
If you fancy making a weekend of it, stay overnight
at a snug local cottage, church or historic hotel. If you're feeling particularly brave (or foolhardy), you could even join a ghost hunt
. A visit to this market is a unique experience, particularly for those of us who spend most of our time in the 'burbs. Open your eyes to a whole new way of shopping, at the same time as soaking up some of Victoria's rich history, and make your way to historic Talbot. I guarantee you won't go home empty-handed.
