Australians love the beach, sun and surf and we've been bombarded with skin safety information for as long as I can remember, but have you ever had your skin checked?
Did you know that:
two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by 70 years of age
more than 750,000 people are treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia each year
the majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun
the incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world.
I know, some of these are really
basic facts , however whether or not you answer yes or no to these questions, it is a really good idea to have your skin checked regularly.
As someone who has a family member at risk, I am not as good as I should be at having my skin checked. I will readily admit, it is easy to be complacent, however it is also really easy to have your skin checked regularly and it is something we should all pay very close attention to.
There are three main types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. We all hear a lot about melanoma, but how much do you know about the others? More information about skin cancers is available from the
Cancer Council .
Knowledge is one thing, however action is another. It is really easy to self-check your skin. If you notice a new spot on your skin or a change in an existing mole or freckle, make sure you see your GP straight away. It is a great idea to also have a professional skin check done every 12 months.
This February, it gets even easier. On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February 2018 from 9 am to 6 pm, courtesy of TAL, free professional skin checks for those over 18 years of age are available at Harold and Cynthia Anderson Reserve, Henley Beach. These skin checks will be carried out by specialist skin cancer doctors who will refer you for further tests if required.
Limited places will be available for walk-ins over the weekend - take 30 seconds now and
Beach book in for your free check. Spots are filling up fast.
Please take the time to have your skin checked, you never know, it may save a life.
