The beautiful array of pastor and cochinita de pibil.
Though Spain may have originally colonized Mexico, a small shop between the Puerta del Sol and Plaza de Callao is bringing the heart of Mexican street food all the way back to Madrid.
Having grown up on the border of Mexico, I know a true taco when I see one. After moving abroad, I've been plagued by terrible, inauthentic chains, and because of this, I'm always skeptical of Mexican food and tacos in Europe.
Yet, I still go out and search for the perfect taco reminiscent of home, and I'm so relieved to say that I've finally found it. Takos Al Pastor is as authentic as it gets, serving up Pastor, Cochinita de Pibil, Carne Asada, and various daily specials every day. When inside, you are immediately submersed in Mexican culture (you may actually forget that you're in the heart of Madrid).
They have tacos, tortas, horchata, and loads of margaritas to choose from. On top of having great, authentic Mexican food, the prices are ridiculously cheap: one euro per taco, four for any flavour of margarita you could ask for. Just make sure you queue up early, as there's always a line out the door.
