Take Five
Brendan Fitzgerald returns with the definitive tribute to seminal jazzman Dave Brubeck
Catch this before it's gone

A highlight of the 2023 Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival, Take Five: The Dave Brubeck Story , presented by Brendan Fitzgerald Quartet, recreates the world of iconic jazz musician Dave Brubeck, his genius, his relationships, his humanity and popular acclaim.

The show title relates to the classic quartet signature tune, Take Five, the highest-selling instrumental of all time, which featured on the 1959 album, Time Out, the first platinum jazz disc moving more than one million copies.

In 1959, Dave Brubeck Quartet's album, Time Out became the first platinum jazz album, while Take Five remains the highest-selling instrumental recording of all time. Together with Blue Rondo a la Turk, these works are identified as seminal and revolutionary expressions of a new era in music. More than a musician, Brubeck was a tireless advocate for human rights and racial integration.

Brendan Fitzgerald narrates Brubeck's story at the piano with a projected montage of images and clips from his life and times. He also channels Jimmy Lyons, a jazz radio presenter who helped launch Dave's career. Fitzgerald's ensemble comprises Peter Raidel, on alto saxophone, Steve Todd, on drums and Quinton Dunne, on double bass.

Brubeck brought his ensemble to the very first Adelaide Festival of Arts in 1960. He was known to have been received very well by the Adelaide arts public.
