If you haven't been down Melbourne Street for a while, you may be in for a surprise with an excellent mix of eating houses, businesses surrounded by heritage homes and leafy streets as well as close proximity to the parklands.

The area encompassing Melbourne Street is known as Lower North Adelaide and has had a resurgence of recent times for the number of visitors discovering mouth-watering cuisines washed down with local and imported wines and beers.

These cuisines range from Japanese, Nepalese, Indian, Mexican, Filipino right through to modern Australian as well as Mediterranean and Thai - all just in the strip between Jerningham Street and Mann Terrace.

[SECTION]Japanese and Nepalese[/SECTION]

Yakitori Takumi is the first and only Yakitori in Adelaide and specialises in Japanese BBQ all cooked in front of patrons by a skilled Yakitori chef.

The advantage of this type of cuisine is the courses are all entree sized which makes them more affordable but also it gives you the opportunity to try a wider range of dishes to fill the appetite and satisfy the palate.

For those of you who have food intolerances, Yakitori Takumi also cater for vegans, vegetarians and offer gluten free options.

Entrees range between $8 - $12.

The Himalayan Kitchen offers both Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine with many of the dishes cooked in a traditional clay oven with home-made spices to enhance the wonderful flavours of meat, chicken, fish and vegetarian dishes.

Established in 2003, the Himalayan Kitchen is well worth a visit to try something just that little bit different! Mains ranges between $18 and $25.

[SECTION]Indian and Mexican[/SECTION]

One of the well-established and renowned Indian restaurants in North Adelaide is the Monsoon Restaurant which offers a great range of Indian food from all regions which gives you the chance of trying many different flavours and experiences.

Anything from Butter Chicken, to Chicken Vindaloo, to Beef Curry and Lamb Rogan Josh is available all prepared with tantalising Indian spices and options are available for either eat-in or take-away. Mains are priced between $18 and $19

If you are into Mexican then you are spoilt for choice with both Zapatas and Montezumas .

Zapatas is Adelaide's oldest Mexican Restaurant established in 1975 and has won many fine dining awards over the years, and as recent as 2012.

The old favourites are still available including enchiladas, tacos and burritos but also blended with some newer dishes all cooked in the traditional Mexican way. Vegetarian options are available and they cater for children really well. Main course pricing ranges between $21 and $25.

Montezumas opened here in Adelaide in 1978 and caters for those who like a more traditional dining experience right through to those who like their Mexican food hot and spicy.

They also offer a great range of Mexican Sangrias, Margharitas as well as Mexican beers. Mains are priced between $17 and $25.

[SECTION]Filipino and Thai[/SECTION]

#tabtop ">Tita Kay's offers Filipino cuisine in a casual dining atmosphere and has some mouth-watering dishes including Crispy Pork, Crispy Chicken, and a Bicol (which is a traditional spicy stew made with chillies and minced pork coconut). Mains will set you back between $13 and $19.

#zoom =100">Tiger Lilly Cafe specialises in Thai food with the fresh flavours of Lime, Basil, Ginger and Curry - both red and green.

They also offer a good range of stir-frys as well as noodles and rice as accompaniments. Mains range between $14 and $20.

You can't go past Ur Caffe for good quality coffee and food.

Established in 2011, the venue offers locally sourced ingredients including sourdough bread, free range eggs from Clare Valley, fresh fruit from Adelaide's Central Market with milk from Fleurieu Milk.

They are open for both breakfast and lunch until 3.30 pm so a great option for a late breakfast on the weekend - they open from 8 am on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Perfect Cup Cafe not only allows you to relax and enjoy good coffee and gourmet teas but also has quality products for sale for you to stock up for home use, including on-line.

[SECTION]Chocolate[/SECTION]

Anything and everything chocolate is on tap at The Adelaide Chocolate School .

The school has been located in Melbourne Street since 2010 and provides a wide range of courses for those of you looking to enhance your chocolate making skills and includes courses on basic chocolate making, chocolate decorations for cakes, Belgian truffle making as well as tempering chocolate.

Groups can book as well as catering for school holidays, parties, and other special occasions including Easter and Christmas.

Prices start at $59 for a 2 hour chocolate making session for the kids during the school holidays.
