Every street, every store, and every door that fills the city of Perth is bursting with new and exhilarating cultures. It is truly a melting pot of unique individuals and delectable cooking! On a Saturday arvo, I always love to walk the busy streets and immerse myself in its hidden treasures, and one week I found myself stumbling into a goldmine of mouth-watering Japanese cuisine. Taka's Kitchen was speedy, cheap and scrumptiously filling, they had me sold in seconds!
From sushi to burgers, they have you covered for every mood and every taste. This little one stop shop provides set menus for dine-in or (for those on the go) take-away. Most meals come with salad, rice, and miso soup on the side, in either a large or a small size. For the hungry vegetarian, they provide a tasty teriyaki tofu or potato cakes and if you are not in the mood for Japanese cuisine, they provide a Mexican meal of crabsticks, cucumber, avocado, chilli sauce, and mayo. Yet for whatever floats your boat, extras are always available, including steamed rice, garden salad, and soup!
So there I sat, after ordering a small Potato Cakes, simply watching the world go by. Soon enough, the food was done! My beeper buzzed and I Hungrily reached for my freshly prepared cuisine. Never having liked miso soup, I found Taka's kitchen a pleasant surprise! The little warm cups of heaven were, in their own right, very satisfying. Possibly the best bit, soft and crunchy all at the same time, the deep-fried mashed potatoes were so simply scrumptious. Oishī (delicious in Japanese)! Year after year since, I have attended lunch at Taka's kitchen with my Japanese class, and each time it seems more exciting than the last.

Now you must be thinking, it is all too good to be true! With great food, comes great prices. Well never fear, because cheap eats are here! A small meal such as a Chicken Katsu costs only $4.50 and the most costly meals remain far below $15. My dish, a small Potato Cakes, with a salad, and rice is only $6. With the addition of a small drink, it totals a max of $10. The perfect price for a perfect meal.
Yet while chowing down on an all too good meal, the lively surroundings caught my eyes and ears. A buzzing could be heard, alerting customers of their freshly cooked goods, office workers chatted loudly enjoying a much needed lunch break, and the endless traffic outside seemed in constant motion. On the corner of Barrack Street, and across from the train station, the busy streets are no surprise. Yet the crowds of customers surging for authentic Japanese food continue to prove that Taka's kitchen is indeed the place-to-be for all to see.
In addition to a quick meal or a good teriyaki, they also cater a variety of platters for parties and gatherings. Picking from a Sushi, Roll or a Hosomaki mix, each gives you at least thirty slices of sushi rolls with unique fillings. Though never having a reason to order a party sized platter of sushi, I look forward to doing so in the not so distant future!
With my compliments to the chef, I make my way out the store dreaming of all the wonderful foods I might try the next time. Bringing you into a completely new world of authentic Japanese take-away, they provided speedy and delicious food for every man, woman and child. So the next time you're looking for a quick bite, don't join the baka's (fool in Japanese) just eat at Taka's!
