Hong Kong comes alive as the entire Chinese population celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival, the second most important event in the Lunar calender. In addition to the ubiquitous mooncakes and lanterns, this vibrant Asia's world city is the only place you can experience a centuries-old tradition.

The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance has amazed locals and visitors every Mid-Autumn Festival since the 19th century. What was originally a simple performance to prevent the affliction of bad luck befalling the village is today an intangible cultural heritage on China's national list. Although the village has been assimilated into the city of Hong Kong as we know it today, you can still experience the fire dragon dance first hand.

From 7 to 9 September, the ancient ritual with a huge dragon and fire dance will be recreated similar to that during the fishing and farming community days of Tai Hang. Nearly 300 performers will come together to maneuver a 67-metre dragon with a 48 kilogram head, 32 sectioned body and covered with over 70,000 incense sticks. It is led by men holding up 2 'pearls', or pomelos studded with numerous incense sticks and accompanied by drummers.
