Dust off your sombreros amigos because Sydney is getting its first ever Cinco de Mayo festival and it's going to be 'mucha' fun. Taking place on the first weekend in May, this Mexican tradition historically celebrates the country's victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Mostly ceremonial with military parades and battle re-enactments, it has evolved over time into more of a celebration of Mexican culture in the States and this fiesta will be the next best thing to jetting off on a Mexican adventure. It's an experience for the senses and more than just a street food festival.

Taking over Dawes Point Park in The Rocks, there will be –

  • Live mariachi music, Latin American bands and professional dancers upping the vibes,
  • Lucha libre (freestyle) Mexican wrestling,
  • Live interactive street art installations by Skullavera,
  • Tequila masterclasses,
  • Taco-eating competitions, and
  • Giveaways

  • Some of the best views of Sydney Harbour can be had and the food will dazzle your palette as you enjoy all the entertainment.

Sydney's best-loved Mexican establishments will provide an array of authentic Mexican creations that represent different regions and styles of Mexican cuisine. Each will put up a signature dish as well as an exclusive festival dish. But that's not all. There will also be a line-up of food stalls and margarita bars.

Coming to the party are famous Mexican deli Rosa Cienfuegos of Dulwich Hill serving up her authentic Al Pastor tacos and tamales, rooftop bar SoCal Neutral Bay, Surry Hills' all-vegan Bad Hombres (Sunday only) with iconic plant-based bites, Panama House bringing their Central American flavour to the table, CHEFIN' catering, Mexican hotspot Chula dishing out modern Mexican fare, fun fusion from Tex Mex & Altos Tequila. To top it off, Messina will cleanse and cool your palette with a special Mexican-inspired dessert.

Starting at noon each day, entry is free but you will need to register for a ticket as numbers are limited to avoid overcrowding. Under 10's don't require a ticket.

Gracias SABE Events for bringing this to our fair city.
