Dumplings made as you watch and much more
Delicious chill dumplings
It was the ladies making fresh dumplings from scratch in the window that attracted me to Ta-Ta House. There are dozens of dumpling cafes and Chinese restaurants along Russell Street and throughout Chinatown so we were lucky to choose the right place to stop amidst the forest of eateries. It was so good I went back twice within four days.
The first time I went with a friend and we ordered delicious soups and dumplings in a delicious spicy chili sauce. I knew immediately my children would love this cafe. We realised we had over ordered when we saw the size of the meals. We could have eaten for two for about $12!
Ta-Ta House is billed as one of Melbourne's newest rising stars on the Chinese restaurant landscape. This is definitely a must cheap eats restaurant with generous servings.
We have now tried the chicken and corn soup, wonton soup, four different dumpling dishes, and fresh vegetables with noodles. The servings are much more generous than I expected for the price and we loved every dish. It cost us less than $30 for four people for lunch. You can't do much better than that for fresh cooked nutritious food.
Note worthy to me is that the food was served very hot.
Look at the colour of those vegis
This is the first cafe I have been to where you order by using an iPad. I think the novelty of self-ordering means you are potentially likely to order more food than you need, especially if you take kids. The photo menu makes everything very tempting. I was very careful that the children's curiosity didn't lead to a very expensive lunch. Twitchy fiddle fingers could have been a disaster.
My daughter wanted to add to this review that she really enjoyed the spicy sauces that the dumplings were served in. Joining in with the review my son commented that the dumplings were rich in flavour and very tasty. He said the sauce was not too spicy but just right. I have to agree, as I don't like my chili sauce so hot that I can't taste any of the other food.
So overall, Goldilocks would love this joint. The food is fresh, the right temperature, the right texture and flavoursome, and the seats are comfy. You can eat and be out fast if you're worried about bears. There's no chance of falling asleep in this bustling, vibrant cafe. Ta-Ta House is great for an adventurous girl's night out on a budget or in a hurry.
