Sylvesters Lookout in the Goomburra Section of the Main Range National Park lies at the end of an easy half a kilometre walk and provides views down the range of Moogerah Lake and the surrounding peaks. Of the 2 main lookouts at Goomburra, this is the best one and easiest to walk.

Getting there

The Goomburra Section of the Main Range National Park is less visited because it is over the range from Brisbane, and it takes another 45 minutes to drive from Cunninghams Gap to Goomburra. This section of the national park can be easily accessed by 2 wheel drive car. But to get to Sylvesters Lookout you need to drive further along Lookout Road. This road is listed as accessible by conventional car, but you have to drive across a stony creek, negotiate some large potholes as well as head up a steep section from the creek to get back out. This is why there are signs suggesting conventional cars should avoid it in wet weather. So make up your own mind when you are there.

The hike

The hike is pretty straightforward along a well maintained path through some very lovely rainforest. This is definitely the easiest walk at Goomburra.

The view

The lookout has a wide viewing platform looking down Fassifern Valley. The most obvious feature is Lake Moogerah and its surrounding peaks, with Mt Greville clearly visible as the tallest of the set.

After hiking

The Goomburra Section of the Main Range National Park is fairly remote. Many visitors come to camp there because of the distance from Brisbane. For day trippers, you may want to bring your own lunch and afternoon snack as well. It is good to time your day at Goomburra so that you can stop for dinner at the Maryvale Hotel about 30 minutes drive from the national park or stop at the Aratula Hotel on the way back to Brisbane after crossing the range.

Overall

If views are your thing, then Goomburra has 2 great lookouts. The 2 lookouts in this section of the Main Range National Park provide very different views and so both are well worth doing. Sylvesters is the easier of the 2 and is near the lovely Araucaria Falls along with other walks. So I think this should be the one lookout walk you do if you don't have time to do both.
