I must admit, I am a big fan of fruit and veg shops. I love browsing the aisles, seeing what's on offer, and checking out all the exotic and not so exotic edibles. Sometimes I'll come home with bags full of lovely produce with no idea what to do with it, purchased on a whim simply because it looked good. Sounds a little strange? Possibly, but I'm sure I'm not the only lover of lovely local fruit and vegetable stores.

Fruit Stall
Fruit, Glorious Fruit

That begs the question: where is Sydney's best value produce store? Of course there are plenty of fruit and veg stores across this great city, you may even be lucky enough to have several in your near vicinity, but which offers the best value for money? At a time when fruit and veg seems increasingly expensive, this is one question I'd really like answered.

Superfresh Eastwood
Eastwood Village Superfresh is great value

I'll put my two cents in and say that one of my favourites is Eastwood Village Superfresh in the northern suburbs. This really is a gem of a store.

Eastwood Village always has a great selection of fruit and veg at really affordable prices and consistently offers specials on a big range of produce. As a bargain hunter I'm always making a beeline for the fruit buckets that offer cheaper prices for quality fruit when you buy it by the bucket. They also have a seconds stand where older produce is on offer for quick sale at reduced prices; admittedly some of this stuff isn't worth buying but you will find genuine goodies, and the discerning shopper can definitely grab a bargain. And the fact that it is always packed is a good sign.

There is also a Superfresh in Crows Nest, which I haven't visited, but if it's anything like the Eastwood store it'd be worth a visit.

Vegies
Fresh vegies for sale

My other favourite has to be Mt Colah Fruit World on the North Shore, a treasure trove of delightful produce at great prices. Mt Colah Fruit World also has reduced bulk fruit and veggies in buckets and bags, and I've found that it has generally low prices all round. They've got a great deli selection to boot, where you can find some lovely gourmet foodstuffs for a good price.

So tell me, where is your best kept fruit and veg secret? Where do you think Sydney's best value produce store is?

We live near Eastwood and love Superfresh and their prices. I've also been to the Crows Nest one which seems to have more gourmet food on offer but doesn't seem as cheap as Eastwood. With that said, the long queues at Eastwood mean you have to be patient if you want to get your fresh produce at a bargain price (make sure you're not in a hurry). Another favorite is Martelli's at Carlingford (haven't been to the Cherrybrook store yet). Not the cheapest but the value is incredible in that the produce lasts and lasts, which just proves it must be very fresh. Tricia.
