If the meat pie is our national dish, the ever-popular sausage roll would have to come a close second. Often overshadowed in the pastry warmer by its round cousin, a top-quality sausage roll is a culinary delight, and I reckon it's time this simple yet delectable treat got the credit it deserves.

I've got years of fond memories of tucking into ridiculously delicious sausage rolls (of questionable nutritional value) from the school tuckshop. Nowadays, I'm quite happy to wolf down a couple of sausage rolls for a guilty lunchtime pleasure or a hearty (and once again nutritious) breakfast after a big night out.

What's not to love about a meal that has only one serving requirement (it's not a suggestion): tomato sauce, and plenty of it?

But where do you go when you're craving a hit of meat and pastry goodness? Where is Sydney's best sausage roll?

The Bourke Street Bakery has plenty of admirers, while Newtown's Black Star Pastry makes an excellent sausage roll.

Brasserie Bread also has a bit of a reputation for making a good sauso roll, and I'm sure there's countless other bakeries right across Sydney that have a fair claim to the title of Sydney's best.

I'd take a sausage roll over a meat pie any day of the week.

Personally, I've never met a sausage roll I didn't like, so hopefully you can guide me in the right direction of where I can sample some of the finest Sydney has to offer.

Well you can’t go wrong with anything that has pastry in and around it... HOWEVER I must say Drummoyne Bakehouse Cafe kills it!! Their sausage rolls have a great taste, and not that frozen, plastic like sausage roll dirty meat flavour that you’d find in some places... but the most fresh, even meaty taste you can get!! (Not JUST for sausage rolls either... pies, cakes, pastries...!!) oh I love it... nothing beats it there!!
