What an interesting question. Art is starting to pop up in many pockets around the city, especially due to the City of Sydney's Initiative to offer grants to art galleries to open up more art spaces in the CBD and inner city areas. Some of this could be considered to be the result of Sydney's quest to be on par with Melbourne.
Maybe this is a sculpture designed to keep Sydney out of the red, who knows. The crashed car perched on the roundabout outside the Sydney Theatre Company at Walsh Bay is striking. It's the first thing that captivates you the moment you find yourself walking downstairs from The Rocks to Walsh Bay.
Who doesn't want to make wishes! Sydney is home to some fantastic wishing well art sculptures. The Italian Pig outside Sydney Hospital for starters. Make a wish, you can become lucky. Hint: rub its nose. Many visitors and locals to Sydney alike like to take photos and have a picture of themselves standing behind this lucky creature. This creature is Il Porcellino. Il Porcellino (otherwise known as Piglet) was sculpted in France in 1962. This sculpture was donated to us by Italy to acknowledge the Italian Surgeons working at the hospital at the time. It's one of five identical bronze hogs worldwide. If you don't want to rub its nose, then perhaps throw in a coin and make a wish. All proceeds go to Sydney Hospital. On the other hand, you will find a barking dog wishing well outside the Queen Victoria Building right opposite Sydney Town Hall. Ruff! Ruff! That's right, the voice is coming from radio personality John Laws. Throw in a coin and make a wish.
Anything to do with nature goes down well. The bird cages right near the Ivy and Martin Place gives people a greater appreciation of nature, and is one of Sydney's best kept secrets unless you really delve deep inside. Bird sounds come as part of the package. One of my favourite art sculptures has to be Robert Woodward's Spiral Fountain at Darling Harbour. A favourite for the kids in particular. It oozes charm and is a sculpture where many of Sydney's street artists want to perform to. A crowd pleaser nonetheless. If you're meeting someone at Darling Harbour, and they say "meet me at the water fountain", you know where to go.
