You can't go wrong with a chicken parmi. In fact, this pub classic is usually the best barometer to measure how good an establishment actually is; a good chicken parmigiana equals a good pub.

It's also usually a pretty safe bet. You could walk into the dodgiest little pub in the dodgiest little town in Australia, but if you order a chicken parmigiana you know you'll be in for a decent feed.



But where can you find Sydney's best chicken parmigiana?

The humble parmi is a pretty simple dish, but when done well it becomes a true gastronomic delight. The chicken needs to be moist and not overcooked, the napolitana sauce of the highest quality, and everything must be topped with lots and lots of cheese. And it probably goes without saying but the bigger the parmi, the better. Add in a bit of greenery and the all-important (but often overlooked) chips and you've got yourself the perfect meal.



The North Sydney Hotel does a decent parmi for $12, while the Crows Nest Hotel's House of Schnitty menu is a good thing.

The parmi is a popular choice at the Lord Roberts Hotel and I've also heard impressive reviews about the cheese-topped deliciousness of the $10 parmi at the Paragon Hotel.

The dish pictured, which I sampled at Newtown's Courthouse Hotel, also gets a pretty high score from me.

It's a great resource for when you're planning your next trip away, plus their ten commandments to ensure your parmi is accompanied by the perfect chips are well worth a read. The three Sydney establishments that receive the best overall rating on parma.com.au for their chicken parmigianas are PJ O'Brien's Irish Pub in the CBD, the Newport Arms on the northern beaches, and the Engadine Tavern down south.
