I'm an incorrigible winterphile . All it takes is a few nights of dipping temperatures and crisper mornings and I'm searching my wardrobe for colourful coats and scarves and looking through cookbooks for warming winter recipes. Give me snow outside and a roaring log fire inside and I'm a happy and contented woman. All those who feel the same can rejoice that the Winter Festival is returning to St Mary's Cathedral this winter with all the fun of a frosty fair.

From Thursday 30 June to Sunday 17 July St. Mary's Road, adjacent to Hyde Park will become a hub for everything from ice skating and European-style markets to snow play and toboganning, and a whole lot of activities and entertainment in between. Live music, delicious winter delicacies, pop-up bars and winter games will invade Sydney for almost three weeks of fun. And it's free to enter, although you will have to fork out for the range of activities.

What's On Offer

Food
Watch out for steaming hot chocolates, fat and juicy German sausage, tornado potatoes, slider burgers, tasty fudge and much more.

Ice Skating
The main icy attraction of this year's festival will again be be the large open-air ice skating rink where patrons can skate to the accompaniment of falling snow. Inexperienced skaters and little ones may like to hire hire penguin skating aids and crash helmets and pads.
Prices: For a one hour skating session prices range from $8 for under 5s to $22 for adults and $60 for a family ticket - 2 adults and 2 children. Prices include skate hire but you are welcome to BYO skates if you have them. Don't forget your extra pair of socks.

Powder Pit
New for 2016 is the Powder Pit, purpose-built for building snowmen, making snow angels, and for fun and friendly snowball fights. You know you want to. It comes complete with real snow that will delight kids and the young at heart. Under 4s must be accompanied by an adult.
Price: $5 for fifteen minutes of play.

Tube Dudes
Fancy some cold and wet hi-jinks on the giant inflatable tubes? Jump aboard to ride these slippery suckers and get to the finish line any way you can. Suitable for those aged 5 and over.
Price: $5 for a ten minute ride.

Toboggan Terror
Snowy hills in the middle of Sydney? Absolutely. Enjoy all the fun of a real snow toboggan ride, complete with sledges. Under 5s must be accompanied by an adult.
Price: $7 for a five minute ride.

Giant Slide
If you don't want to get cold or wet or do anything too terrifying then maybe the giant inflatable slide will be more your style. This jump and bump slide is for ages 4 and above.
Price: $5 for three rides.

Igloos
If all of that isn't enough for you or if you like your après ski a little more sophisticated and private, then you can enjoy Winter Festival inside one of the five private igloos available to rent for any corporate event or special occasion. The igloos (inflatable, not ice blocks) are for up to 20 people inside and an extra 10 people can be accommodated in an outdoor fenced area.
