I do love a good scavenger hunt. Whether it's a guided hunt or an online game I love everything involved - from looking for clues, to solving puzzles and riddles, answering trivia questions or racing to beat other teams. Yes, the scavenger hunt is my kind of fun. So when the opportunity to review the Let's Roam Sydney Scavenger Hunt App arose, I jumped at the chance.

Let's Roam offers a range of self-guided scavenger hunts in many cities around the world, including the USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand and Australia. To view all of their current locations please click here.

In Sydney there are currently three different hunts to choose from – Sydney's Secrets, Merrymaking in North Sydney and Inside Sydney.

As luck would have it I had the chance to try the Inside Sydney Scavenger Hunt. This hunt focuses on history and culture, two of my favourite things. This hunt is billed as perfect for locals or visitors as you will see all of the best sights in Sydney as well as discover some hidden gems. It's important to note that there is no tour guide on this scavenger hunt. It is all done via the Let's Roam App.

So how does it work? First up you will need to purchase tickets and download the Let's Roam App. Enter your voucher or QR code and then you can pre-register. Tickets or vouchers are valid for up to two years on the App. Then when you are ready to go and do your hunt, you enter a team name and add your extra players. Each player in your team has the option to choose a role, such as a photographer, explorer, brainiac or youngster. You will be told your starting location and once you arrive it is time to start the scavenger hunt.

My family, including two reluctant teens, were roped in to join me on the scavenger hunt. Our starting point was one of Sydney's most iconic locations, Bennelong Point, where we were given our first challenge. On the steps of the Sydney Opera House, one team member is asked to display their vocal talents in a video challenge – let's just say there is nothing like being thrown in at the deep end! But once we got started we were soon on a roll.

On this scavenger hunt you are asked to answer questions, look for particular items, solve puzzles, count objects and take photos and videos. After you have finished at each location you have to navigate yourself to the next location. The focus is history and you will discover some of the oldest buildings in Sydney.

There are around 12 locations included on the hunt and the App provides tidbits of information concerning the people or buildings at each location. Don't worry, I won't give away any spoilers here. However, I will say that if you do already know Sydney quite well the locations are probably places you have been to or walked past many times before without stopping to look closely or learn about their history.

However for visitors or those who are not so familiar with Sydney, this scavenger hunt is an easy introduction to the history of the city, helping you to discover and explore a good mix of Sydney's icons, historic buildings, parks and the CBD. While we found it easy to navigate from one location to the next, if you're not a local, you can refer to the map on the App to give you a sense of which direction you need to go to find the next location.

My family and I enjoyed the Inside Sydney scavenger hunt. While we do know Sydney quite well already, it was an interesting activity that we could do together and an unusual way to explore the city. Even my reluctant teens got involved in trying to solve the clues, the photo challenges and navigating. One thing I would advise is to try to go during business hours if possible. As we did our hunt late on a Saturday afternoon we found that most of the locations were closed so we couldn't go inside or explore them further.

For those who are keen to add a competitive edge to the activity, there is an option to compete for the High Score and ultimate bragging rights. There are extra points up for grabs if you find the hidden treasures or complete all of the photo challenges.

Alternatively, if you're not interested in high scores or the leader board, the great thing about this scavenger hunt is that you can, for the most part, go at your own pace, and take your time. In some instances, there may be a time limit once you have arrived at a location and have to find an answer for a challenge, but for the most part, it is self-paced.

It's also good to know that there is a pause button for the scavenger hunt. This allows you to take a break, go for a drink or a bite to eat, or spend a bit longer at a location that interests you. We used the pause button to stop at a café about halfway through our hunt, then resumed when we were ready.

The Inside Sydney Scavenger Hunt takes approximately two hours to complete, although this really depends on how fast or slow you take it and if you take any breaks. The walking distance is approximately 5 kilometres, depending on how good your navigation skills are.

The great thing about this activity is that there are no bookings or reservations required, you can go at your own pace, and there is no set start or finish time, it's all up to you. And as you don't need to book in advance you can choose a day and time that suits you.

The Logistics:

  • All players should download the Let's Roam: Scavenger Hunt App from the App Store

  • The starting locations for each activity can be found in the App

  • Make sure your phone / device has plenty of charge and storage space for photos and videos

  • Walking Distance: approximately 5km

  • Average Play Time: 2 Hours

  • Primary Focus: History
