When someone mentions the Sydney Royal Easter Show, what are the first things that come to mind? Is it the farm animals? Or the weird and wonderful, sweet and savoury, novelty foods? Perhaps it's the showbags? While these are all excellent reasons to visit the Show, there is so much more on offer, so this year why not discover some of the more unusual activities to see and do at the Show? For your convenience here's a list I prepared earlier:

1. Create your own Kokedama

Ever heard of kokedama? It's a centuries old Japanese practice that was traditionally used to display bonsai specimens. The English translation of kokedama is literally "moss ball", and today it is commonly known as a style of potting plants in a ball of moss and then displaying them in a dish, or suspended in air.

At this years Easter Show you can create your own kokedama to take home. Workshops will run from 13-15th April at 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm.

To take part you are required to purchase a Kokedama kit from the Sydney Royal Flower Shop, which is located within the Flower and Garden Pavilion. The kit includes a plant, all of the materials you will need, plus admission to the workshop with Kokedama by Krystalis.

Cost: $45 for Kokedama Kit from the Sydney Royal Flower Shop

Try it at: Flower & Garden Pavilion on Grand Parade

When: 13-15 April at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm

2. Observe A Daring Escape

If you are fascinated by magicians, illusionists and daredevils, and quite frankly who isn't, then you won't want to miss Sam Powers. He is known for reaching the Grand Final of Australia's Got Talent and for being one of the star performers in The Illusionists world tour and this year he will be performing at the Show.

Every day Powers will be attempting a thrilling Houdini-esque escape. He will be buckled up tight into a straight jacket, suspended 12 metres in the air, and then locked under a flaming set of steel jaws. Will he escape before the jaws snap shut?

Watch this nail-biting spectacle every day at The Intersection.

Check the Show Guide f or times.

3. Attend your first rodeo

Dust off your Stetson hat and your country boots in preparation for the Wrangler Federation Rodeo Challenge. For six nights during the Show, you can see man take on beast in a thrilling edge-of-your-seat experience. This is your chance to experience the rodeo without even leaving the city.

The Wrangler Federation Rodeo Challenge will take place from 6th - 11th April in the Giants Stadium. Competition events include the Bull Ride, Bareback and Saddle Bronc which all chase the elusive 8 seconds, and the Steer Wrestling.

See it at: Giants Stadium at 6pm from April 6 - 11

4. Meet Iconic Australian Animals

While the Sydney Royal Easter Show is synonymous with farm animals, did you know you will be able to see Australian native animals for the first time at the 2023 Show?

Come face to face with some of Australia's cutest and coolest animals at the new Native Animal Display. Over 12 days you'll be able to meet a variety of Australia's iconic animals

See it at: RAS Wildlife Down Under - corner of Macarthur Street and Orana Parade - 6th - 17th April

5. Experience a Drone Show

As the sun goes down head to Giants Stadium to experience an aerial display with a difference.

Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it's hundreds of drones taking flight to create a spectacular display of movement and light. Blending technology and art, the Drone Show is a showcase of precision, co-ordination and creativity.

See it at: Giants Stadium, from 7pm, 6th-17th April

6. Time Travel to the 1970s

Enjoy a blast from the past as you travel back in time to the Easter Show of the 1970s - think flares and platform shoes and a soundtrack of Grease and the Village people. The Heritage Pavilion display this year will focus on the ways and means of getting to the Show by bus, train or car in the 1970s.

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the time with a display featuring show bags, photos, posters, memorabilia and a fashion cavalcade featuring vintage 70s fashion.

For those in the mood to groove, you can channel John Travolta and practice your Saturday Night Fever dance moves on the "2UE 70s Dancefloor".

You can also climb aboard a double-decker Leylan Atlantean bus, see the horse-drawn Caleche which carried Queen Elizabeth on its maiden voyage for the RAS in 1970 and for everyday passengers a humble FC Holden taxi.

See it at: The Heritage Pavilion -corner Hawkesbury Street and Grand Parade - every day from 9.30am - 6.30pm

7. Join in the Alpaca Promenade

Have you ever wondered what noises an alpaca makes? If you'd like to find out, join in an Alpaca Promenade session where you can take one of these friendly farm animals for a walk. And with such adorable faces who could resist a quick selfie?

Where: Alpaca & Cattle Pavilion, along New England Avenue from 13-17th April

8. Create a Bee Hotel

Check out the buzz at the Flower and Garden Pavilion where kids can enjoy a healthy dose of Vitamin BEE in a Bee Hotel Workshop.

We all know that bees are vital to our environment, without them 75% of our food crops would not exist. In this workshop children will create an environmentally friendly "hotel' which bees can check in and out of while they are pollinating your garden. The workshops are free, with all materials provided, as well as guidance on making your bee hotel and tips for hanging them at home.

To participate make a beeline for The Flower & Garden Pavilion at 11am and 3pm daily.

9. Explore Animal Sculptures

If, like me, you're partial to a sculpture exhibition you're in luck. Head to the Davison Lawns, on Orana Parade, to explore a range of large scale animal sculptures which have been created by five talented Australian artists.

You will enjoy sculptures by NSW artist Kane Minogue , Victorian artist Mark Niglia , NSW artist Stuart Taylor, Tasmanian artist Matt Sloane and NSW artist Glen Star.

Combining rural vibes with works of art, many of these exquisite life-size creations have been made using recycled materials.

See it at: Davison Lawns on Orana Parade everyday from 8am – 9pm

The 2023 Sydney Royal Easter Show will run from 6th April until the 17th April 2023 at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park. The gates open at 8.30am every day.
