I'm a freelance writer living on Sydney's north shore. I like tea, books and pop music. If I can combine these into a single activity I'm a happy man.
Modern life not for you? Get thee to a vintage show
If you are anything like me, you probably sometimes wish the whole 21st century would just go and do something quite unprintable to itself. Identity theft, Twitter, Facebook, internet scams, unaffordable house prices, the GFC, a world that expects you to be switched on 24/7, the relentless dumbing down of culture - it's all a bit much sometimes isn't it?
Thank God for rose-tinted glasses and the Love Vintage fair which sweeps into Sydney again this month for their summer show. Take a brief respite from the pains of 2012 and luxuriate in a time when the world was such a better place. Over 60 of the best vintage dealers in Australia will be present selling everything under the sun including retro, vintage and antique clothing and accessories, antique and vintage jewellery, linen, lace and textiles and small collectables. Periods from 1900, right through to the 1980s, will be represented and depending on your age, you can either soak up the glamour and mystique of a bygone era or gawp in astonishment and regret when you realise that old piece of tat you threw out 30 years ago is now selling for a small fortune.
Men's and especially women's fashion is the big drawcard and Love Vintage promises there will be fabulous beaded flapper dresses, 1930s Hollywood glamour gowns, men's suits from all eras, 1950s party dresses, and crazy fashions from the psychedelic 60s. Fashion avoiders (and bored husbands) take heart though as there really is something for everyone at the fair, encompassing the whole spectrum of life (well, almost) including antique tablecloths, baby clothes, bedspreads, bottles, posters, magazines, buttons and cake trays.
Love Vintage is not just about shopping, and a raft of entertainment and catwalk shows will ensure you are fully immersed in the world of vintage. There will be swing dancing every evening, and a variety of themed catwalk shows including A Touch of Burlesque and Wedding Frocks and Fashions from the 1930s. If you like to be more hands on with your vintage, there will also be a Vintage Styling Masterclass and a workshop on how to protect and care for your vintage treasures.
Sydney Swing Katz will be performing at the Show. lovevintage.com.au
Whether you are after a fabulous new-but-old wardrobe, some quirky Christmas gifts or just want to indulge in some good old-fashioned nostalgia, Love Vintage will satisfy on every level. And sure, coming out into boring old 2012 may be a bit of a drag, but just think those daggy old jeans and t-shirt you are wearing right now will be oohed and aahed over at Love Vintage in 2072. Don't throw them out just yet
