The nights are getting colder and we are all starting to prepare for the cold season ahead. The ugg boots are coming out and the scarves are around our necks but Sydney is taking it one step further to get us all in the mood for winter. They are bringing The Arctic to us with a life sized polar bear made from ice.

Inspired by the Arctic landscape, the is a life-sized representation of a hunting male polar bear. Just to give you an idea of how big that is, it measures 2.2 metres high and four metres long. This ice sculpture will be at Customs House, Circular Quay from Friday 3 June to Friday 10 June and will also play a part in World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June.

British sculptor Mark Coreth will carve the ice sculpture at Customs House Square on Friday 3 June from 7am and will leave it to gradually melt over 3-4 days with only its bronze skeleton remaining. The event at Customs House is a free public event where the public are invited to touch the ice bear as it melts. The ice sculpture is a powerful metaphor for the human impact on our environment which is the theme for World Environment Day 2011.

To be able to make the possible The Purves Environmental Fund , who commissioned the ice bear in Sydney, teamed up with WWF Australia, 1millionwomen and Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC). Together, the environmental organisations have over 150,000 members who will be encouraged to visit and raise money for each of the groups. Each of the three groups will have information booths at Customs House Square, providing ideas for personal climate change action. will also be lit at night with LED lights, complementing Vivid Sydney's 3D light projection at Customs House between Friday 27 May and Monday 13 June.

Where did the idea for an ice bear come from you ask? The inspiration behind it came from animal sculptor, Mark Coreth who witnessed the effects of climate change when he first travelled to Baffin Island during November 2007. Mark knew that few will ever experience the Arctic, but realised that he could bring the Arctic to everyone in the form of an Ice Bear sculptural event.

will be the sixth appearance of the sculpture. Having its first appearance in Copenhagen in 2009 and then following in London, Toronto, Montreal and Manchester all highlighting the urgent need for action on climate change.

If you don't have anything on for the week of 3rd June to 10th June or even if you do, it's time to make new plans and find time to check it out. Get involved and head down to take a look. It really is worth looking at and in doing so you will also be doing your bit just by showing support to the cause.
