The Sydney Fish Market will ring in the Year of the Tiger with Lunar New Year festivities. Come and join in two lunchtime celebrations from 12noon on Sunday 20 January and Tuesday 1 February.

Marking this occasion with two traditional lion dancing performances, the atmosphere will be one of prosperity for all, both retailers and visitors. This spectacle takes place on Sunday 30 January and Tuesday 1st February.

You can also choose to welcome the Year of the Tiger by coming for dinner and enjoy the delicious food available from all the Sydney Fish Markets retailers. Or, buy your favourite fish varieties and cook a traditional Chinese dish at your place.

Sydney Fish Market Culinary Ambassador, Sean Connolly says, "Sydney Fish Market is always buzzing during the Lunar New Year period. It's a special time to enjoy the festivities, spend time with family and celebrate Chinese cuisine through seafood banquets and traditions. My favourite dishes to enjoy during Lunar New Year include steamed fish with ginger and shallot and, XO Pippies by the truckload!"

Enjoying food with family and friends is what Chinese New Year festivities are all about. Seafood plays a leading role in the dishes served at this time. Come along on either the Sunday or Tuesday at lunchtime and sample the many traditional dishes prepared by your favourite retailer.

Some of the traditional dishes on offer are -

Whole Fish - A whole fish is the first choice in any Lunar New Year celebration. It symbolises wealth and welcomes prosperity for the coming year. You can purchase the dish prepared or choose your own from the fresh displays and it will be cooked to order.

Steamed Scallops - Scallops symbolise new opportunities and the possible opening of new horizons. This is due to their open shells. Enjoy them steamed with soy and spring onions, which is the traditional way, or grilled, sashimi, or topped with cheese and blowtorched to perfection.

Seafood Noodles - This dish is the key element in a Lunar New Year feast, and the length of them represents how long your life will be. Choose from the hot seafood dishes and they will be served atop a bed of fresh noodles. Add your favourite sauce and enjoy.

Abalone - This species represents good fortune for the year. Traditionally served on the fifteenth day of celebrations marking the end of the holiday, it can now be served on any day during the fifteen-day event. Abalone is a speciality and is recommended by many of the seafood retailers.

Chilli Crab - With its bright red colour, crab is usually the centrepiece in a Chinese New Year feast. Said to bring prosperity and good luck, the Mud Crab is traditional with King Crab being a tasty alternative.

All these wonderful, traditional Lunar New Year dishes will be available from selected retailers at the Sydney Fish Market for the two week celebration.

The Lunar New Year commences on Tuesday 1st February, with celebrations happening over the following two weeks. Sydney Fish Market will host the lion dance performances on Sunday 30th January from 12:00pm to 12:30pm and Tuesday 1st February from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

Please check with venue for any COVID restrictions in place at the time of event.

Paid car parking is available at The Sydney Fish Markets.
