Sydney's Best Alternative Bingo Nights

There's a bingo revival brewing in Sydney. No longer the sole domain of bingo halls and RSLs, bingo nights are now springing up at more and more bars around the city. For a guaranteed fun night out, brush up on your bingo lingo, grab some friends, and get your 'bingo!' call ready. Here's three of Sydney's best alternative bingo venues.
Hustle and Flow Bar, Redfern Hustle and Flow is a unique small bar in Redfern with a distinctly Hip Hop twist. The guys at Hustle and Flow have recently started running
'Notorious B.I.N.G.O'. Its old school bingo, remixed. Expect each number to be called with a side of hip hop flavour.
The aim is straightforward, be the first to complete a horizontal line (5 numbers) and shout 'bingo!' before the next number is called. If you do there's a sweet bar tab up for grabs. You might even want to use your winnings to start the A to Z challenge. The aim here is also straightforward, complete an A to Z shots menu (over a number of visits) and then have the grand honour of getting your face up on the wall. Notorious B.I.N.G.O is every Thursday night from 7pm. Its free to enter.[BREAK]
Cooper's Hotel, Newtown Bingo has been a regular fixture at Cooper's Hotel for some time now. But be warned, this is not your average bingo. It's called
'Tranny Bingo', and it's exactly as the name implies. Our fabulous host for the evening was Verushka Darling, assisted by Krystal Klear. These ladies know how to host a seriously fun bingo night. The night itself is part bingo, part cabaret, with lots of audience participation thrown in along the way.
Players can purchase a large book of numbers for $10 or a small book for $5. Each game involves attempting to complete a different pattern on your card. Verushka speeds up the pace as the night goes on so do your best to keep up. And a piece of advice, pay attention to the particular pattern you are after, and don't be too hasty that you call a false bingo, as there will be consequences. There are lots of free drinks and bar tabs awarded during the night so there's plenty of chances to win (unfortunately for my friends and I however, it was not our lucky night). Regardless of whether or not you win, you will be sure to enjoy yourself.Tranny Bingo is held every Monday night from 7:30pm and costs $5 or $10 to play.[BREAK]
The Angry Pirate, Redfern Not good with numbers, but think you know your music? Then
'Musical Bingo' at the Angry Pirate is the bingo for you! The concept is simple, yet brilliant. Numbers are swapped for songs, resulting in a combination of music trivia, bingo, and a jukebox playing everyone's favourite hits. Listen out for the songs on your card and try to hit that hit! There are two rounds, with a different musical category for each. If you're not having any luck with your bingo card, there's other chances to win with games like walk the plank and old stuff/new stuff.
Musical bingo, hosted by
Hit That Hit , is currently on a short hiatus at The Angry Pirate, but is normally on a Wednesday night and free to play. Stay tuned for its return.
You can also catch musical bingo hosted by
Kye Brown Entertainment at a stack of weekly venues around Sydney, including the General Gordon Hotel and the Moorebank Hotel. Check out their website for locations.
The verdict is in. All around Sydney people are embracing bingo nights. Not only are they a great, fun night out, but if you're lucky they can be quite rewarding. In two nights my partner and I won $90 in bar vouchers and 2 CDs.
