Have a Basket Buddy Christmas

Christmas is a great time to reflect on the year and find gratitude for all the wonderful things in your life. It is also a time to give back to your community and make the season truly meaningful.

What better way to get into the spirit of giving this Christmas than by helping a person in need over the holidays?

Since 1995, the Sydney Basket Brigade has had a mission each Christmas "To change people's lives one basket at a time".

To quote the great Paul Kelly: 'with little things, big things grow".

Talking about her experience with Sydney Basket Brigade, volunteer Natalie said "The last delivery I did last year, the elderly lady was teary when she said "I can't believe someone did this for me"

In what can be the loneliest time of year for some people, a basket filled with things they cannot afford to buy for themselves and even the smallest of gifts can make them feel special and enjoy Christmas.

The Sydney Basket Brigade is part of the Magic Moments Foundation, a national non-profit, non-religious, non-political organisation run by a team of big-hearted volunteers.

The Sydney Basket Brigade works with local grassroots community organisations to ensure the baskets reach the families and individuals most in need. This year, they are gearing up to deliver over 3,000 baskets to those who would otherwise go without food at Christmas.

Annick Kinsella, the Coordinator of the Sydney Basket Brigade says "It is the time and energy that our incredible community dedicate and the support that they provide which makes everything we do possible".

The Basket Brigade is all about giving back at Christmas. The volunteers focus on helping those who have fallen on hard times or those who might need to be reminded that someone cares about them. They're about making sure that Christmas is full of love for everyone.

This annual appeal is a wonderful event where the community can come together to donate gifts of food, clothes, toys, books, vouchers or money to those in need. Volunteers then gather on packing day to collate the items and fill the gift baskets.

The baskets are all given anonymously. A card and small handwritten note are included in the parcel that lets the receiver know the basket is a gift from someone that cares, all that is asked in return is that they do same when the day comes and they are able to.

The focus for the Sydney Basket Brigade in 2018 is its Basket Buddies program. The aim of the program is to build a community of volunteers across Sydney who are willing to add extra items to their grocery shop to fill a box for a family in need, including an unwrapped present for a child of any age.

Volunteers can personalise and decorate their basket with paint, beads, ribbons, paper and pictures to make it look and feel extra special and add a card with the Basket Brigade's special message.
