Sydney's April Eclipses

Sydney-siders will be treated to
not one but two eclipses this month: a lunar eclipse
and a solar eclipse. The former one will be pretty easy to see (just look to the sky in the evening) but the solar eclipse will take some sorting out, since it involves looking at the sun, but it will be worth it, since the next solar eclipse visible from Sydney won't happen until 2023.
The
lunar eclipse will be the first one to take place and it will happen in the early evening on Tuesday April 15. It will be a total eclipse, and will last from around 5.30pm to 7.30pm. When it rises in Sydney, the moon will already be in the Earth's shadow and will have a red hue. To get the best view of it, make sure you're somewhere with an easterly aspect.
Later in the month, on Tuesday April 29,
it will be a solar eclipse that has everyone's eyes on the sky. This one will only be a partial eclipse, lasting for about an hour, from 4.15pm to 5.15pm, but the moon will still obscure more than half the sun.
Since it involves looking at the sun, this second eclipse is a lot trickier to see than the lunar eclipse, as you can't really watch it with the naked eye. A good way to make sure you don't miss out is to
attend the viewing event at
Sydney Observatory . Through special eclipse glasses and a filtered telescope, you'll be able to see the eclipse take place. Bookings and prices for this event can be found
here .
