I love slow travel, slow food and discovering new adventures and delicious regional food in new locations. I'm on an indulgent quest and I'd love you to follow at

Why not take a friend?
If you have ever experienced a Hammam, or traditional steam bath, you will appreciate the many benefits of this ancient therapy. I first fell in love with it in Budapest, one of the few large cities in the world with naturally occurring thermal waters believed to have healing qualities.

I went along to the Rudas Baths, in Budapest, on a Tuesday which is women-only day (men have four days a week and weekends are mixed and bathing attire becomes compulsory). There was a large pool with several smaller pools, varying in temperature, dotted around the 'vapour-bath' area. Women, singly or in chatty groups, moved from one pool to another and sometimes just reclined nearby. I had the impression it was a regular weekly meeting for the women, you know, instead of going for coffee.

Now I love getting together with my women friends, of course I love to be pampered, and I love water, so I set about searching for something similar in Adelaide. And guess what? I found it.

Sy Luxury Spa is in the Next Generation building on War Memorial Drive in North Adelaide. I love everything about it so please indulge me while I recount my wonderful experience. I'll start at the very beginning.

Naturally I had invited a friend to come along so that we could do the Hungarian woman thing and chat in a warm pool. On arrival we were shown to our very own change room with lots of marble benches, sparkling mirrors and fluffy white towels and bathrobes.

After changing into our fluffy bathrobes we were escorted to our own private steam room with its sparkly ceiling, glowing candles, rain shower and warm plunge pool.

After spending a blissful half an hour immersing, reclining, showering and, of course, chatting in our steamy haven we headed next door to the massage room.

An hour Wellness massage was the perfect opportunity to silently process the various topics of discussion that had taken place in the steam room. A Gregorian-style choir put a new twist on modern tunes from the sound system, lulling us into a sublime relaxed state.

From there we floated into The Relaxation Suite in preparation for our return to the real world.

In actual fact it was an opportunity to resist returning to the real world a little longer.

We were offered peppermint tea or sparkling wine but due to the difficulty in making a choice we settled for both.

You can also order tasty snacks while relaxing but we decided to save that option for next time.

Suitably relaxed we returned to our private change room to shower. Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and some basic cosmetics were provided to assist us in achieving our real world re-entry.

I love it that no-one hurried us along, in fact we lingered at Sy for almost three hours, which I think made the whole experience great value for money. That fact, along with the professional service, serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings will, indeed, entice me back again and again.
