Hindley Street isn't all shisha bars and strip clubs; there are plenty hidden secrets along the street. Stuck between a day spa and a skate shop is a staircase descending into one of Adelaide's coolest vintage stores: SWOP Clothing Exchange.
Imported from Brisbane, SWOP Clothing Exchange was created by a group of stylish friends who found the idea of a clothing exchange was a great way to sustainably update your wardrobe. One of these ladies made the move to Adelaide in 2015; lucky for us she brought the SWOP brand with her.
While a bit of the initial SWOP Adelaide range came along for the ride from Brisbane, these days the majority of the stock has come straight from Adelaide wardrobes. Fridays are buy days. You can come down to the store with a bag of your cool, but unwanted, clothes and get either 25% of the sale price in cash, or 50% of the sale price in SWOP vouchers.
The selection of stock is more carefully curated than your average op shop. While there are the usual rows of floral dresses and winter sweaters, all the clothes are vetted before they're accepted and put on the shelves. The clothing swap system means that the store is a good indicator of a city's fashion - while they come from the same beginnings, the Adelaide and Brisbane stores have vastly different collections to reflect the style of each city.
Even if you're not buying or swapping, SWOP is a great place to have a browse. There's always a decent mix of music on rotation, and that guitar in the corner? Feel free to have a play. Emily is more often than not behind the counter; she brought the store to Adelaide and she'll no doubt have some advice on some of the cool finds currently in stock.
