Swiss food and entertainment comes to Melbourne

My son has just been backpacking around Europe. If he had stayed home it would have saved him a lot of money and sleepless nights spent in dorms with snoring young people.

Because if you wait long enough in Melbourne all good places come to us.

We have every multi-cultural festival under the sun and being Melbourne plenty in the shade and rain as well. And one of the next ones on our cultural horizon is the annual Swiss Festival on Sunday 6th of April 2014

Apparently doing anything in Switzerland is exorbitantly expensive so just as well it is coming to us without the Swiss Franc price tag.

Multiculturalism always starts with the belly because every country has its own unique foods which are so worth experiencing.

At the Swiss Festival at Southbank you will be able to try Rivella, a Swiss soft drink created by Robert Barth in 1952, which is produced from milk whey.

You can also try Raclette (a melted cheese dish) with potatoes and condiments.

There will of course be crepes and waffles as well as beer and wine imported from Switzerland. And of course cheeses such as Gruyère Emmental, Vacherin, Fribourgeois, as well as the famous Raclette used in the dish previously referred to.

But chocolate is the thing that will really brings in the crowds. Switzerland is the home of Lindt and there are whispers that, if it is anything like last year, there will be free samples.

As you might expect there will be yodelling, dancing and singing live on stage on Queensbridge Square, Southbank.

This year's line-up includes the Swiss Folk Dance Group, Alpenrose, the Swiss Yodel Choir, Matterhorn, the Swiss Companion Singers, and for the first time the Guggemusik-Auckland (Swiss carnival brass-band) and Kiwi Yodellers from Auckland, New Zealand.

The annual festival brings together all Victoria's Swiss community groups. It is also a great chance to sample goods and products by Swiss companies. Swiss ingenuity, Swiss know-how, Swiss craftsmanship, and Swiss precision all in the one place.

Don't be late or they will be looking at their Swiss watches and they are never wrong.

This is a free event and Queensbridge Square is easily accessible, being only a short walk from Flinders Street Station or you can even hop on the free City Circle tram.

All good things come to those in Melbourne who wait -- including Swiss chocolate.
