Swing into Tuesdays and have a dance; what a perfect way to get through the week. Every Tuesday The Basement turns back time to the roaring 20s through to the 40s.

Swing dancing originated in the 1920s when African Americans created the Lindy Hop and the Charleston while shaking their tails to Jazz music. This became such a popular dance craze that Hollywood took to it in droves and it swept across America. Nowadays swing has had a revival and with a big following young and old. It is vibrant and energetic, but no doubt all ages can give it a go. I personally have always loved dancing and it is my chosen activity over the gym any day. Not saying I don't go to the gym as well but I much prefer dancing to get fit while having fun.

The Basement 15 Piece Big Band, led by Justin Fermino, will crank it up from 9pm until 11pm, so no excuse not to stay around and show off your moves. Even if you aren't a dancer, it would be well worth dropping by for a drink and people watching while tapping your feet to the beats.

Dance Classes and Entry

Dance classes will be conducted by Swing To It Sydney. They are the experts when it comes to swing dancing and specialise in Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, St Louis Shag and Balboa. Unusual names! Have you heard the saying dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire? Well, you can be the judge yourself! Unlike Latin America, which has a lot of moves and hip swiveling, this one is about hopping, bopping and dipping.

Beginners classes will commence at 7pm
Intermediate classes at 8pm.

Entry to the Basement is $8.00 if you only wish to watch
Entry and Beginners class $14.00 (Pay at the door only)
Entry and Intermediate class $16.00 (Pay at the door only)

You can buy general admission online -$8.00 but there is a booking fee of $3.80 so it is better to pay entry at the door

It is easy to get there, you can either catch a bus into the city, train to Wynard or Circular Quay. From both stations it is only a 5-10 minute walk.

Nearby Restaurant suggestion

Tapavino, Tapas, Sherry Bar, Restaurants, City Restaurants, Sydney CBD Dining out

If you wish to make a night of it and have dinner prior, you could pop into Tapavino situated just in the alleyway next door to The Basement, so it is a perfect stop before or after dance classed but keep in mind it does close at 11.00pm in the evenings. Have a couple of small dishes of tapas and loosen up any pre-dance nerves with a glass of Tapavino's special sherry or try some Spanish wines; you will be swinging to the beat in no time!

Dancing is certainly a great way to get fit for Summer and all year round, so why not get down to The Basement and shake your tail feather!
