Have you ever wanted to learn to swim, or improve your technique? I did - I knew I had problems but didn't know how to solve it on my own, and so after years of looking from the sidelines, I booked in some one on one lessons at my local pool.

And it was the best decision.

I love the pool - love being in water, love swimming and needed to do something for fitness. But when I swam breast stroke, I barely moved. And when I tried freestyle, I tended to inhale water with every breath.

So I booked 3 private one on one lessons. These gave me 30 minutes in my own lane (yep, no kids to crash into) with a qualified and experienced instructor. In my first lesson, I picked working on breast stroke and my instructor asked me to demonstrate. And I swam my best - and went backwards!

She gave me some quick tips, we worked with a kickboard on my leg technique (the heart of my problem) and by the end of the 30 minutes I was able to move myself forwards - not rapidly, but certainly significant progress. During my second lesson, we did much the same - worked on my legs and put together the technique.

With my third lesson, I asked to focus on freestyle - same again, a quick assessment of what I was doing, and then some feedback on what they could see that I couldn't. Within minutes, I was able to get my timing right with breathing and managed to swim a lap.

My instructor was great - at no point did I feel silly for having 'lessons' (nor that swimming lessons were just for kids). Instead, I got constructive feedback on what I could focus on, and good advice on how to make the necessary changes.

You can do one on one lessons, or pair up with a friend to reduce costs.

We all learn as kids, but unless you keep it up, techniques get rusty, our body moves differently over the years, or we just lose our confidence. A private lesson or two is worth it to overcome all of this! And although summer may be over, most of Adelaide's outdoor pools are open well through autumn, and many indoor pools are open all year long.

You're never too old to try - don't let the kids swim rings around you!

My lessons were at Unley Swimming Centre, Ethel St, Forrestville. Prices are $40 for a single lesson for one person ($30 a lesson if you book multiple lessons) or $55 if there are two of you ($45 for multiple lessons), and you can book any time other than when swim school is on.

At the moment, Unley Swimming Centre has a general entry of $7.50 for adults (concessions available) but currently on Fridays after 4.30pm, entry is a gold coin donation for their chosen cause. Check with your local pool for their prices and times.
