The ever popular Swell Festival is just around the corner. This year it will take place from the 14th - 23rd September on Pacific Parade Currumbin Beach Queensland. This festival is a time to delight in the extraordinary exhibits which are presented along the expanse of sand that is normally used by people to sand bathe, picnic, or for the life surf club members to practice on. One can walk along the outdoor exhibition virtually at any time and in most cases touch the artworks exhibited. Even though some of the displays can be interactive, it is enough in most cases just to admire the awesome creations.

One can take as many pictures and videos as one wishes while experiencing the wonderful display of 50 sculptures built by artists from Australia and abroad. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this special festival and it promises to be even more spectacular.

My first time to attend this festival was in September 2010. It was a fantastic day with the sun shining brightly and not a cloud in the sky. People from all walks of life mingled together as we walked along the beach of Currumbin. There were huge contraptions and sculptures rising towards the sky, dominating the landscapes. There were also tiny sculptures of animals close to the ground, as well as unusual sculptures made from all types of materials such as wood. Some of the creations were so life like that people would go up close, peer into the faces of the statues and then laugh self consciously as they realised that the statues were just that - statues not real people!

Over the ten days that this festival is on, one can experience not only the sculptures but enjoy many things as well. There are twilight walks, informative artist talks, discovering new perspectives at the Public Art Forum, wander through the Swell Smalls Gallery as well as participate in artist master classes and childrens' workshops.
