Sweetie, You Won't Believe It - Film Review (Sydney Underground Film Festival 2021)



Dastan (Daniar Alshinov) can no longer stand the constant nagging of his highly pregnant wife (Asel Kaliyeva) and decides to escape for a day with friends, to go fishing. Life was starting to look good until a series of unforeseen, sudden, incomprehensible, violent and irreversible events take place. From Kazakhstan, Sweetie, You Won't Believe It , is a black crime comedy from Kazakhstani Director and Co-Writer Yernar Nurgaliyev. An Australian premiere, it's 84 minutes long, with subtitles and it's SUFF's Opening Night movie.

Its aim is to change an ingrained culture of cinematic complacency and revitalise enthusiasm for cinema.

This film is kray kray CRAZY - and crazy good for those who love the genre. It's filled with eccentric characters and it's genuinely, surprisingly shocking, and hilarious. A comedy of errors with blood and guts, it shoots from the hip and hits the target every time. You never know what's going to come at you next. From cringe-worthy scenes of digging boogas (done subtly in the background, but you can't un-see it) to bodily fluids splashing in unexpected places - causing a collision with the bad guys, every actor in the film delivers performances you won't easily forget.



Surprisingly it's not there just for shock value over a couple of scenes. It's a well thought out no-holds-barred road trip movie that eventually reaches its destination in a commonsensical sequence. It starts with a majorly nagging wife (well played), that has three best friends heading out to escape, only to meet three unsavoury characters with a murderous glint in their eye and their fainting compadre. However, there's another killer player in the mix, along with a creepy father and daughter team; and there you have it. It's a fun, if a little bloody - romp, and one not to be missed. It's fully engaging and entertaining with laugh out loud moments. Cringe or cower - put it on your list!
