Is it as sweet as it claims to be?
I'm always eager to try desserts at new places. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong time to try SweetHeart Coffee House because they only serve desserts after 7.30 pm and I visited them in the afternoon for lunch.



The coffee house is set on Currie St, near the TAFE building and is open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays. It's quite quiet during the day as the only people popping in are people on their lunch breaks trying to grab a quick meal.



The interior has a simple design; there are some cute lanterns on the side near the wall and pretty wall decorations but other than that, nothing fancy.

The lunch menu is not very impressive or varied; there's a choice of rice with a few Asian-themed dishes, focaccias and salads. I decided to go with a salad while my companion chose a focaccia.



I'm pretty sure I said I was dining in, but for some reason I was still given a take-away plastic container. It's like they didn't want to waste their plates or something. Anyway, the salad was really disappointing. My chicken salad felt cheap and tasted cheap...well it was cheap, at $6. Still, there was not a redeeming thing in that salad besides its cheap price.



The chicken focaccia was also disappointing. The bread was too tough and hard to get a proper bite and it felt like my friend had to wrestle with it. The chicken was dry and a little overcooked. Let's just say I'm definitely not coming back to have lunch there anytime soon.

I did manage to try their mille crepe, perhaps they're most popular dessert because they had it refrigerated. It was just a plain mille crepe with strawberry jam on the side.



The cake wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The consistency was still alright and it was quite flavourful. But the jam served on the side was horrible; it was obvious they just used cheap jam because of the mouth-pinching sweetness and the chunks of hard fruit in it.

Maybe the only thing I actually liked about SweetHeart Coffee House was the drinks; my iced chocolate and my friend's iced coffee were actually pretty good.



Though I feel like I haven't given this place a fair chance to wow me with its desserts, what the place is supposed to be famous for. But for now I just can't bring myself to return for the fear of being disappointed.

Usually when I read glowing reports about a cafe/restaurant on Weekend Notes, the cynical side of me says that the writer was paid for that 'critique'. Nice to know yours wasn't. Refreshing! ;)
