Sweet tooths must be delighted with the latest addition to the West Ashgrove shopping area. Sweet Crumbs Patisserie, owned by Wayne and Brenda Lee, is definitely not just another cafe. The couple are very definite that they don't want to take that direction. With Wayne being a qualified pastry chef, he intends to remain true to the profession and for that, we should all be extremely thankful!
In this beautifully decorated shop you will find the most divine looking treats which make it hard to walk away without treating yourself to one of the delicacies on offer. Shortbread citrus bars, coconut and pecan cake, tea cake with a custard centre, apple frangipani flan with blueberries, white chocolate and passionfruit cream bars and raspberry frangipani tarts are just some of the temptations you'll face at Sweet Crumbs. For those looking for something savoury, you'll find items like wholemeal pastry vegetable tart, individual ricotta tarts with roast vegies and cheese, tomato and bacon tart waiting for you.
Although situated on busy Waterworks Road, sitting at the outdoor tables and watching the world go by is a very pleasant experience. At the time of writing a nearby tree is full of bright yellow bloom, prettily framing the outdoor seating area. If your sense of smell is sharp, you'll also notice an edible herb growing in the garden beside the tables!
Wayne and Brenda know what they're doing and with the help of a trained pastry chef and artist, they produce creative and mouth-watering goods. Wayne has worked in establishments such as the Hilton Hotel and Jupiters Casino and was co-owner of Dreamy Donuts in it's early days. If you have a special occasion coming up, you'll be happy to know that Sweet Crumbs Is also available to assist with your catering needs and will take orders to make special occasion cakes.
Sweet Crumbs is also a wholesale business, with an impressive customer base including the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and the Keri Craig Emporium.
Sitting on the counter at Sweet Crumbs you will notice a jar of "Sweet Crumbs for Doggies". This is a dog friendly business and your four legged friend is very welcome and well catered for. A water dish is placed outside for fur babies, so why not bring yours along and treat him or her to a very special "doggie cookie"? Wayne and Brenda are the proud owners of three West Highland Terriers, whose photos can be found hanging on the walls in the shop. They are also supporters of "All Westie Rescue Inc", a voluntary organisation in Melbourne dedicated to re-housing surrendered and rescued West Highland Terriers. To this end, Brenda bakes her Sweet Doggie Crumbs to help raise funds for this organisation. There are other clues that this couple are dog lovers, but I'll leave you to discover these for yourself when you pop in for a Gian Carlo coffee and treat!
