Petersham is a Portuguese area in a friendly, inner western suburb of Sydney. Therefore expect a variety of different Portuguese chicken shops here. Best of all, to sweeten up the deal, Sweet Belem on New Canterbury Road is home to the most amazing Portuguese tarts I have ever tasted. You might know this place, you might not. Either way Sweet Belem (this sweet tooth paradise) can easily be dubbed as one of Sydney's best kept food secrets. This is despite little heavenly Portugal opening up shop in 2003.

The decor is stunning yet rather simple. The colourful blue and white tiles are the perfect backdrop to a beautiful patisserie come coffee shop. The whole experience went fairly quickly like a bullet train. Why? I was catching up with one of my new Sydney friends that I have not seen since September. There was plenty of ground to cover. That while taking in the flavour of the cinnamon spices on the top of the tart, to the overall smooth texture, pleasant taste and aroma of this simple slice of heaven. That's right the Portuguese tart. A lot to take in, yet the sensory (and social) overload was worth its weight in gold.

With traffic challenges getting to Sweet Belem from Wolli Creek train station, and despite pushing our time together half an hour forward in the afternoon, we were lucky to have scored the last two remaining tarts. Their portuguese tarts literally fly out the door, like hotcakes. They are that divine, and they're filling too. Ever so filling at that.

It would not (in all seriousness) be a great idea, after trying a Portguese tart at Sweet Belem to go anywhere else for this simple slice of Portuguese heaven. Hands down these tarts are utterly divine.

The chai latte was also a great treat to enjoy here. The serving size was rather generous. You would come to expect a smallish latte glass, yet instead the chai lattes here are served in a large triangular clear mug. It would have been good to have had some water to share, yet as my friend and I (on this occasion) were so busy catching up, we forgot to ask. She devoured her coffee too. Sweet Belem is one little busy patisserie, and for a moment you will feel like you have stepped into Europe, yet you're only a couple of blocks away from Petersham train station. The sweetest Portuguese tarts around. Sweet (ever so sweet) Belem, thank you so much.
