Do ugly ducklings really transform into beautiful swans? They do in East Fremantle.

The Swan Yacht Club has recently completed a dramatic transformation into a crisp, modern venue with a fresh new look. You don't have to be a club member to enjoy the spoils either, although club members do have the advantages of cheaper bar prices.

The old beer garden has been replaced by a stunning new outdoor alfresco area overlooking the water. The original bar is still intact, with the remodelling worked around the bar, which is good to see as it certainly adds a great deal of character to the place.

The upstairs bar and alfresco area have also undergone renovations and now looks ultra modern. We were seated downstairs as karaoke was happening at the top bar.

The menu has also been given a revamp since my last visit and has a range of Australian dishes such as starters, salads, burgers, steaks and seafood.

For starters, we ordered the grilled chorizo and halloumi, garlic bread and the salt and pepper calamari. The grilled chorizo was salty and delicious, while I could've easily polished off all the calamari myself.

Between our table we ordered a range of mains, including the SYC Butterfield Angus Grilled Beef Burger, which has a lovely thick Angus beef patty, plus ketchup, salad, pickles, bacon and cheese on a bun and served with a cute little basket of chips.

I ordered the Free Range Chicken Breast with Creamy Marsala Mushroom Sauce, which was simply perfectly cooked and tender. The sauce was beautiful – creamy but not too rich or overpowering.

Our table also chose the House Made Mushroom Medley Provencal Ravioli, the 450g Char Grilled Butterfield Angus Rib Eye Steak and the Kids' nuggets and chips (because what else do kids eat when they go out for dinner?) There was a bit of a wait on our food to arrive, but certainly no complaints after that.

The children's meals include an ice cream cone for dessert, and the wait staff were nice enough to offer us an extra cone for my toddler – any parent will know that when your niece and nephews have an ice cream and your toddler doesn't, a tantrum is imminent. Some how we ended up with an extra ice cream too. Bonus!

There is a tea and coffee station in which you can help yourself to tea and instant coffee and there are desserts available.

Anyone can visit the Swan Yacht Club restaurant and you don't have to be a member to do so, although members do enjoy a discount on drinks. It's always been worth a look but now it's definitely a destination of choice in East Fremantle.
