Hi I'm Jack, weekends are too short, so I love to make the most of the time we have. I also love cooking and occasionally write a blog of the food I love to cook, if you'd like to join me for dinner, click here dinnerwithjack.blogspot.com.au
Windy Creek Estate may not be the easiest winery to find, but once you have found it, you will be so glad you did and you will soon come accustomed to the journey through the valley to get there, as you are sure to come back, again and again. I say this with an air of confidence because I am speaking from my own experience, and I know that I will be back there soon, to enjoy not only the fantastic wines, but the awesome hospitality provided by wine maker Tony Cobanov and his lovely wife Ruth.
Tony's dad brought the Swan Valley property in 1937 after emigrating from Croatia. The Cobanov family at first grew grapes for dried fruit production and made a little wine on the side for the Croatian community. The wine made was so good it soon became the core business and has developed into the award winning winery it is today.
Windy Creek currently have 12 table wines including 6 whites and 6 reds and 4 fortified wines including a White Port, a Shiraz Liqueur, a Muscat Liqueur and an 8 year old Port.
My wife has fallen in love with the Cabernet Merlot, it has become her drink of choice, at $10.00 per bottle or $100.00 a dozen, it is very good value too. I don't mind a drop of it myself but if push came to shove then I would settle for the Old Vines Shiraz @ $12.00 a bottle and for the same deal as with the Cab Merlot buy a dozen for the price of 10.
The Cellar Door The cellar bar is in a garden setting and has a wonderful rustic charm, with beautiful cottage garden surrounds looking out to the vines and the Australian bush; it is very homily and a relaxing place to while away a sunny afternoon.
Even though when we enter the gates to the property, we know exactly what we want, we find it is almost always the case where we will prop ourselves at the end of the bar to have a chat with Ruth and Vanessa, whilst we sample the entire list on the tasting card once again, and when the company is as good as the wonderful wines, why would you not?
The Cabernet Merlot keeps us coming back for more!
The 2012 Vintage has just been released and there are some beauties amongst them too, I am not much of a white wine fan, but after trying the 2012 Chardonnay, I ordered a half dozen bottles to take home immediately. The Classic Dry White is outstanding also, but the fist sampling of Chardonnay had my mouth watering for more.
If you enjoy a Rose styled wine, have a go at the Caprice, it is quite spicy and has strong strawberry characters, I think would be great for summer lunches, if you like a chilled red that is a little gutsier try the Autumn Red. I love this wine when I have spicy Asian food, it is the perfect accompaniment.
The Wicked Stepmother
When you are there make sure you check out the Wicked Stepmother's produce on offer at the cellar bar, pickles, chutneys and jams, they are so good, I love the Eggplant and Capsicum relish so much I always buy 1 or 2, when I can they often sell out, try a spoonful with the complimentary Borrello Cheese and Crackers whilst you are wine tasting!
Highly recommended place to visit in the Swan Valley.
