Something old, something new, something to eat & do
Swan Settlers Market is only five weeks old at the time of writing this article (opened February 2019), and they are already a popular place to visit. They are something that will attract locals and people from across Perth and will enhance the drawability to have a day out in The Swan Valley.

The market is within the refurbished iconic building in Lennard Street, Herne Hill (by Mondo Nougat and Morish Nuts).

It is a different market as it is a 'destination' market, meaning it is an attractive place to visit with numerous options once you get there, so somewhere you can play and stay for as long or as little as you like.

Some of the fresh local produce available to buy

This is a place where people can meet, have a coffee, a bite to eat, peruse the arts and crafts, buy some fresh local produce, let the kids play in the enormous outdoor sandpit and mum and dad can have a glass of wine whilst listening to some live music. There is something for everyone.

Some of you will already be aware of Annie's Vintage Wonderland and the spectacular retro and vintage goods available to buy in her outlets. Well, here you will find Annie's Collective Wonderland, a unique shopping experience and a new way to shop in Perth.

Annie's Collective Wonderland

It is a collection of mini shops all under one roof! There is vintage, retro, rustic, pre-loved vintage clothing/handbags/shoes/belts, funky, junky, dusty! Books, New Age, jewellery, shabby chic, upcycled, recycled, sustainable and eco-friendly good on sale.

It's bright and colourful, well laid out, and one point of sale till. All items are coded and tagged so is an easy check out procedure for which shop(s) you have made a purchase in.

This way of shopping works so well in other parts of Australia and is a brand new concept for Perth.

Each shop has its own style, flair and flavour and all shops get restocked weekly so there is always something new to view.

I bought a few vintage PEZ machines and the items were put in a paper bag made from old magazines. I love that idea! So cute and environmentally friendly.

Then when you come out of the Wonderland that is Annie's, you will find more arts and crafts shops/stalls selling a range of locally made new gifts (unusual gifts) including soaps, metalwork, wooden artefacts, artwork and photography, candles, plants and flowers, glassware, pottery, plus cakes and cookies, meats, mead, chutneys, superfoods, Southern Raw Pet Meats plus dog accessories. The list goes on and on!

This is a fabulous place where making fresh and local produce accessible and giving local artisans a place to display their work, is a winning combination and will give these markets a long and prosperous life.

I particularly took a liking to the metal garden sculptures shop where all items are handmade using a hand operated plasma cutter (not computerised) and designed, free-hand cut, welded and created in York, WA by Dee (The Steel Lady).

Dee is given a lot of corrugated iron as well as collecting it from old derelict buildings all around The Wheatbelt (some dating back 120 years) which she recycles and upcycles and creates gorgeous pieces. No two items are the same due to the texture, colour, weathering, paint, rust, nail and bullet holes (I kid you not!) in the raw material. I love all the pieces which are uniquely Australian, individual and original artwork.

This is a great shop and one I will be returning to in the near future

You can also watch the fascinating process of making yarn out of alpaca fleece and then you can buy a number of garments that have been made expertly by hand using that yarn.

The refurbished building has a long history, which you can learn about in the mini museum and see some artefacts from a bygone era.

The big green machine in the middle of the building is an interesting addition as it is still working. It has been slightly adapted so you can drop your loose change into the feed and watch it as it is taken on a journey and then ejected at the opposite end. It is a brilliant way to collect for charity and is a discussion point with everyone. You will want to feed it change to watch it work. Genius idea!

The cellar door is very pleasing on the eye and fits so well into the market vibe. There is seating inside and outside, so you can enjoy a glass of wine whilst listening to live music and watching the kids play in the sandpit.

The markets are easily accessible if you don't drive as they are on the Swan Valley Explorer Hop on Hop off Bus route and if you do drive, there is plenty of free parking on site.

There are a number of places to get a bite to eat and a drink with seating dotted around the venue so you can have a rest and people watch.

I already love this place and I know it will become a firm favourite with the people of Perth and visitors alike.

It is currently only open Thursday and Friday 10am-4pm and weekends 9am-5pm and public holidays but there is a vision to be open 7 days a week in the future. Check their website for current opening times.
