Swan Lake, one of the world's most popular ballets, is returning to the Sydney Opera House from Friday, 1 April for 3 weeks of passionate performances.
This romantic ballet, created by Tchaikovsky over 140 years ago, has inspired countless performances in theatres and opera houses around the world. The exquisite classical music has graced films and even video games to build atmosphere. The haunting story has excited a new generation after the box office success of
Black Swan, the film telling the story of the duality of the black and white swan and the emotional struggle to become those characters. Natalie Portman deservedly received an Academy Award for her performance. Watch the trailer
here to relive the tension.
The romantic battle against evil recounts the tale of a prince enchanted by the beauty of a maiden, trapped into the body of a white swan by an evil sorcerer. His efforts to rescue her and fulfil the destiny drawing them together is challenged by a cruel enchantress, deceiving the prince into a mistake he will forever regret. As the magnitude of his error is realised, he resolves to sacrifice something so great, it sets up a final act where love's magic could last for eternity.
Be enthralled by the music, dance and story in the Joan Sutherland Theatre. A version of the ballet was also performed in Milan's Opera House in Italy, available to enjoy on

Stephen Baynes has produced the choreography for this version, retaining the compelling traditional aspects of the dance. He's joined by Hugh Colman as costume and set designer, creating breathtaking sets which always elicit gasps as the curtain raises for each of the 4 acts. The costumes are elegant, yet striking but truly don't inhibit or distract the performers from completing acrobatic sequences which draw spontaneous applause.
In the role of the maiden, Odette, Amber Scott will likely be the chosen dancer. A principal artist with the Australian Ballet, she's been performing around Australia with the company for 17 years, with special guest appearances in New York, China and Germany. Joining her as Prince Siegfried, Adam Bell is also an experienced principal artist, returning to this role after exciting audiences during the last tour of Swan Lake in 2013 and with the Shanghai Ballet in 2014. He's often the prince, starring in the role in the ballets of
Cinderella and
The Nutcracker Suite. They are aided by the talented corps de ballet ensemble, the finest ballet dancers in Australia, many having joined from countries in Asia and Europe, eager for the chance to excite local audiences and work with perhaps the finest ballet company in the southern hemisphere.
The Sydney season concludes on April 20, with a variety of start times (1.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm) to appeal to dance lovers of all ages.
