For a limited season, the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre will be in Melbourne performing Swan Lake at the Princess Theatre. The Russian based ballet company are highly regarded worldwide and seeing them perform recently I was completely awed.
If ever there was a time to see Swan Lake in its traditional form this is it. The St Petersburg Ballet often opt for their productions to be as close as possible to the original and watching the skill, stamina and grace of the cast had me sitting up in my seat. Their Prima Ballerina Irina Kolesnikova was just amazing. She had the audience captivated.
This will be the first time in sixty-five years that this enchanting story has been told at the Princess Theatre. What a wonderful and inspiring evening we had to see this production of Swan Lake by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre.
Swan Lake is the story of the beautiful Princess Odette who has been cast under a terrible spell by the evil sorcerer, Rothbart. By day she and her handmaidens are transformed into white swans and at night briefly returned to their former selves. One evening while on a hunting trip the handsome Prince Siegfried stumbles upon Princess Odette. Hearing of her sad tale and imprisonment, he vows to help her. They soon fall in love and swear "undying fidelity", and with this alone they can break the spell. But Rothbart will have none of this and hatches a despicable masterly plan to trick the prince to fall in love with his daughter Odile, who happens to look very similar to Odette. The prince once realising what he has done is devastated and rushes to Odette's side to beg her forgiveness, which she does, but is sad that her fate will be to forever remain under the spell. A great battle ensues between Rothbart and Siegfried, and he manages to defeat Rothbart and break the spell returning the princess to her true form, and the rest is history.
