Swags are a great product (a cross between a sleeping bag and a full-sized mattress) that provides basic shelter to the homeless, both in Queensland and around Australia. Customised for use on the streets, Street Swags, a charity that provides these swags to the homeless on the streets, have come up with a great initiative, known as Swagtember. During the month of September, you will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be homeless. Participants can either camp-out, sleep-out, or hold an event to raise money and awareness for this good cause. You can register as an individual or as a group – the choice is yours. Please see the website for details.
There are also some great prizes up for grabs for those who participate, including Wotif travel and accommodation vouchers, Walkabout beg swags, Westpac and Red Balloon vouchers, and many more up for grabs. Even if for some reason you can't participate in Swagtember this year, there are still plenty of ways you can support this great initiative. By purchasing a quality walkabout bed, Street Swags will donate two street swags to the homeless on your behalf. You can buy one by clicking here, or alternatively you can donate directly via the website.
According to Jean Madden, the founder of Street Swags, "each year there are hundreds of thousands of people who are homeless around Australia. We really need to supply more swags, as the need is much greater than current supply ". So to support Street Swags during the month of "Swagtember", 'sleep out of your bed for those who don't have one'. For more information, please see the website.
