A Day in 'The Shire'

Unless you have been living under a rock recently, you would have heard about filming for a new television series for Channel 10 called "The Shire". Channel 10 has described the show as "a bold, highly addictive dramality series that follows the often outrageous lives and loves of a group of people who are destined to become the most talked about in Australia".

As a former resident of the Sutherland Shire, here's the locals guide - experience the area first hand before you watch it all on telly.

So we will be starting our day with (in my humble opinion) the best coffee in the area. 'White Horse' are fairly new on the scene but it's quickly become the locals caffeine hub.
White Horse
Address: 2/137 Flora Street, Sutherlan whitehorsecoffee.com.au/
Open: Monday - Friday 5:30am - 5:30pm, Saturday 5:30am - 3:00pm

Now we'll be heading to 'The Boatshed at Woronora', where you can hire kayaks, canoes and boats to cruise along the Woronora river at your leisure. It's the ideal way to take in the beauty of the area and build up an appetite for lunch.

Address: 131 Prince Edward Park Road, Woronora

Open: 7 days a week, 08:30am - 6:00pm

It's time for our picnic lunch at Gunnamatta. There are large grassed areas, shade trees and a playground. This beautiful beach is on the river, and there are no waves in the enclosed swimming areas (note: area not patrolled by lifeguards). There are also shelter sheds and disabled toilets.
Address: off Nicholson Parade, Cronulla

If you're getting an afternoon sugar craving the best place to go is 'Frangipani Gelato Bar'. The gelato here is super yummy (and I have a sweet tooth!). They also make a decent coffee and serve a selection of Italian pastries including biscottis, macaroons, canoli's, cakes, tortes and flans and chocolate from Essenze.

Address: 117 Cronulla Street, Cronull www.frangipanigelato.com.au/
Open: Hours vary, generally 7am - 10pm

We'll head off on a gentle stroll along the coastal esplanade. Get a first hand look at the locals surfing the hot spots. The Cronulla Coast is actually Sydney's longest beach and if you're fighting fit you can start the walk from Kurnell then head north to Boat Harbour, Wanda Beach, Elouera Beach and North Cronulla.
Address: (depending on where you start)

Dinner and drinks will be relaxed tapas style at 'Splash Tapas Bar'. Great food that's fun to share. My recommendations are the Char Grilled Chili Chorizo, the Soft Shell Crab with Aioli and the Roasted Mushrooms with Garlic, Olive Oil and Garlic. And if you're not designated driver, they also have an extensive drinks and cocktails list. Sangria anyone?

Address: Shop 2, Cote D'Azur Building, End of Kingsway, North Cronulla Beac www.splashcronulla.com.au/sc/site/
Open: 7 days from midday

So there you have it - you can take the girl out of the shire but you can't take the shire out of the girl!
