The venue is at the Miami Marketta complex, close to Miami High School. Susy is a professional artist and children's book illustrator, who runs art classes in the holidays for children aged 6 – 12 years (and after school classes during term time for her regulars Juniors 5 – 8 years and Seniors 8 – 12 years).
The subject for the lesson my girls attended was a frangipani flower, since it was a small, all girl group. Their resulting artwork was gorgeous, full of colour and enthusiasm. The creative energy in the class is there for all to feel and the kids enjoy being around other kids who love to draw too. My daughters had a great time and came home glowing.
Young children have a natural interest in drawing and painting but for them to grow and develop their art, they need to be taught skills and techniques, be introduced to different mediums and have lots of guided practice. To not teach art is akin to leaving kids in a room with a piano but never teaching them how to play. A few naturally talented souls may be able to teach themselves but the majority would miss the opportunity of discovering the joy of playing an instrument.
Susy Boyer is a freelance illustrator and painter, living and working near the beach on Queensland's Gold Coast. She describes her fascination for colour:
"I'm totally turned on by colour, it has the power to literally stop me in my tracks. Some of my earliest memories are of brightly coloured objects or pictures that fascinated me".
Personally, I love the bold use of colour and the vibrancy in Susy's pictures. Couple this with an enthusiastic teaching style and easy connection with children and here is an art teacher worth giving your child the opportunity to meet.
If you are interested in your child attending a workshop, you will need to book, so call Susy on: 0413 134426/ E: firstname.lastname@example.org. The 2 hour session costs $20.
