Free and cheap eco-friendly inspired events all September
South Melbourne Market is on a mission to inspire sustainability this September, holding a variety of free family fun and low cost eco-aware events for Sustainable September.

Aiming to inspire more sustainable shopping and living, South Melbourne Market's Sustainable September is packed full of free eco-friendly focused entertainment and workshops for kids and interesting learning opportunities for adults.

Here's what's on at the market for Sustainable September:

Fairy Petunia will be providing free entertainment for the kids on Wednesday 6 September, 13 September, 20 September and 27 September 2017 from 9:30 am until 11:30 am. Her 30-minute show will feature sustainability-focused games, stories and activities.

Also for the kids, the Turning Waste Into Art workshop will teach them how to upcycle waste by showing them how to make art out of discarded packaging. The workshop is fully supervised and all materials are provided. It costs $20 and booking is required, with a choice of either an 11:00 am - 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm workshop on Friday 29 September.

Another workshop teaching children to upcycle, with a focus specifically on denim, is the Make Your Own Denim Bag workshop. The hour and a half workshop, which is suitable for children aged 8-14 years, entails learning how to hand stitch a small handbag, a tote or a big day bag. This workshop also costs $20, with all materials provided (however the option to bring your own old jeans is there), and booking is also required, with a choice of either an 11:00 am - 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm workshop on Wednesday 27 September.

One for the adults, the Beeswax Wraps Workshop teaches participants how to make homemade beeswax fabric wraps, which can be used in place of unsustainable clingwrap. Easy to make and with a pleasant smell, beeswax wraps make the perfect sustainable alternative. In the workshop, which costs $10, three wraps each will be made. Materials will be provided and booking is required, with a choice of either a 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm or 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm workshop on Saturday 16 September.

Turning Waste Into Art

As part of Sustainable September, South Melbourne Market is also offering Sustainable Circuit Guided Tours to market goers keen on learning how to become a more sustainable shopper. On the tour, which is being run every Wednesday throughout September, sustainable shopping will be taught, sustainable market traders will be met (with the opportunity to taste their produce), and the market's sustainable initiatives will be explained. Booking is required, with tours costing $10.

An art exhibition showcasing art created by local artists out of market waste will coincide with the market's Sustainable September events. The Turning Trash to Treasure Exhibition, which was inspired by Kim Simon's oyster shell and steel sculpture 'The World is your Oyster', is free to visit and can be found in the SO:ME Space from 20 September until 1 October on market days.
