Ideas to inspire, to shop and live more sustainably

An absolute favourite of mine, there's only more to love about this market for their vision of a sustainable future. South Melbourne Market - corner of Cecil and Coventry Streets, South Melbourne, is passionate about sustainability, and they work hard at reducing their environmental footprint, with future generations in mind.
Open on Wed 8am-4pm, Fri 8am-5pm and on the weekend from 8am-4pm, if you head to the Market between 15-30 September 2018, you'll run into a 2 week festival packed with activities and fun things for the kids, and inspirational ideas and education for the adults to shop and live more sustainably as a whole. Enjoy 2 hours of free parking on market days in the parking area up the ramp, or there's street parking.
Catch the last gig from the Live n Local Music Festival which falls smack bang on the first day of Sustainable September. The Mystic Trio will be entertaining you on Sat 1 Sep from 12-1pm with original and traditional Timorese songs. Laid back and relaxing, their almost mesmeric music comes straight out of a culture where singing is second nature.
If you're coming to the market, a good intent for Sustainable September would be to contribute to the recycling initiative of the Market and Vanden Recycling, and bring your cleaned out plastic milk bottles and lids, and pop them in the recycling bin located in the SO:ME Spacebetween 19-30 Sep only. SO:ME has permanent and pop-up stalls and is a unique retail concept in the heart of the Market dedicated to great design, fashion and creativity. If you've got the goods, you can apply to be one of their pop-up stalls.

Throughout September, enjoy a tour of the Market's traders who are leading the way with sustainable practices. The Sustainable Circuit is a self-guided tour you can do in your own time, so be sure to pick up a map at the Market Office next to the lift and you're on your way. You can also download the map.
Complete the sustainability circuit, answer 3 questions, get it right and return the answers to the Office to receive a free South Melbourne Market 150 years commemorative tea-towel! The Back of House Tours for behind the scenes sustainability in action are so popular, they've almost completely sold out, at time of writing. They only have 2 places left on Sat 22 Sep from 11-11.30am. Though free, these sessions need booking, so be sure to keep an eye out for future events.
The Neff Kitchen Market - Stall 90, Cecil St, Sth Melb, has a hands-on cooking fun event for your aged 9-12yrs Demi Chefs on Wed 3 Oct 2018 from 11.30am to 1pm.Tickets are $25 per person and there are only 10 places left for this hands-on class with Chef and Primary School Teacher, Sally Lukey - Sweetpea Cuisine. For the kids who love crawly bugs, they might just love the Wormlovers Worm Farms, turning food waste into nutrient-rich plant food. The event runs from 12pm to 4pm on market days throughout Sustainable September, and it's free. There'll be a live worm farm on site so the kids can see the worms in action and learn how they play a vital role in your garden.

So popular, many sessions are sold out and there's only 5 places left on Sun 16 Sep 2018 from 4-5pm at $25 per person at the Neff Market Kitchen. Zero Waste Victoria's Emily and Che will provide you with the necessary materials to learn how to make these fabulous alternatives to plastic wrap, for you to then take home.
The NEFF cooking station is going to be flat out on Wed 19 Sep from 8am to 4pm, running a Waste Free Kitchen. Free cooking demos will be running to show you how to make delicious meals from slightly wilted spinach and other leftovers. As we are all aware, food waste is a huge issue in today's society, and what better than to learn to change your habits one step at a time. The Live Picklery & Market Kitchen runs in much the same vein on the same day and timeframes. Leftover Lovers will be pickling, preserving, infusing and fermenting produce 'waste' that has been gathered from stallholders. Learn to 'get' the value of waste and how to reduce what we throw away on a daily basis.
