Would you open your home?
Sustainable House Day is coming up again on the 7th and 14th of September. Yes, you read that right: this year Sustainable House Day is on two Sundays in a row.

Sustainable House Day registration 2014

According to the organisers this is so that people who are opening their homes this year can choose to only open one day if they like, and still attend other open houses the next weekend. After all, a truly sustainable house is a never-ending endeavor!

Sustainable House Day has run since 2001, and this year they are aiming for over 220 houses and gardens open nationally. Registrations are open until Friday the 15th of August, so if you're interested it's best to get organised.

Forms can be downloaded here. Each homeowner only needs to fill out the 'Homeowners Agreement' form. You will also need to take a photos of your house, but these can be sent through after registrations close.

While many homes open for free, others ask for a small donation on entry. This can help the homeowners with printing flyers etc for the day, can be donated to a charity of your choice, or can just pay for a nice night out afterwards.

Are you interested but not sure if your house is 'sustainable' enough? The coordinators say that in general they look for at least three features. These can be solar hot water, solar PV, insulation, water tanks, native or edible gardens, LED lights or even eco friendly paints. This is not a definitive list. There are strawbale houses and earth rammed houses, as well as many more features.

In some cases, one feature is enough to open your home. There are some extraordinary gardens of course, but also some homes with their own wind or hydro electric systems. Still not sure? Contact one of the coordinators through the Sustainable House Day website.

People who have built custom designed houses, and people who are renting all open their homes, as well as attend or volunteer on the days. If you are interested in opening your house, or know someone who is, please head to the website and register before registrations close on the 15th of August.
