Suspended Coffee - Share the Coffee Love

Who says coffee-drinkers are a highly-strung, grumpy bunch? Judging by a new movement that is sweeping cafes across Melbourne, coffee drinkers are in fact a generous, considerate bunch.
The movement I'm referring to is the Suspended Coffee initiative. It's very simple - when you buy a coffee at a participating cafe, you can also pay for an extra one, which you don't receive but which is recorded by the cafe. This is a 'suspended coffee'. These coffees are then available to someone who can't afford one themselves.
The best part about it is that there is no judgement - if a suspended coffee is requested and available, it is freely given, no questions asked.
The movement started in Naples, Italy, and was brought to Melbourne by Declan Jacobs & Jett Mahmud in March 2013. In Naples, it is done as a gesture of appreciation for receiving good luck, to pass the grace on to someone in need - a sort of 'coffee karma'.
It's not surprising that Melburnians have embraced the Suspended Coffee initiative. We love our coffee and, especially as we head into winter, we appreciate the golden glow of a freshly brewed coffee. And we know coffee tastes even better when shared with others. Why wouldn't we want to take part and get an extra glow from knowing we've helped brighten someone else's day just that little bit?
The
Suspended Coffee Society of Melbourne is the organisation that is spreading the word throughout Melbourne and in fact the whole of Victoria, encouraging cafes to take part and promoting those that do. If you would like to know where your nearest participating cafe is, you can check their
website . If your local cafe isn't on the list, why not approach them and ask if they will take part?
New cafes are joining the movement all the time, so it's worth keeping an eye on the Suspended Coffee Society of Melbourne's
Facebook page or their
Twitter feed .
You can also
download a flyer and stick it up in your workplace to spread awareness among your colleagues. Pin the list of participating cafes next to it, and watch magic happen!
