Andrew Baines is an internationally recognised Adelaide artist who is renown for his surreal paintings and quirky photo shoots on Adelaide beaches. With a strong social conscience and a wicked sense of humour, Andrew's art installations often attract large numbers of participants and spectators.
Perhaps the most outrageous of Baines' photo shoots was
Dunny Day at Henley Beach . It was the sequel to an astonishing event where twelve protesters including former immigration minister Amanda Vanstone and Adelaide radio personality Bob Francis dressed in black suits with bowler hats. They then posed on potties to successfully encourage the local council to provide toilet facilities.
More recently
Suits in the Sea and
Short Legged Dogs Unite kept the coastal community chortling and chuckling. But Andrew Baines does have a serious side, and
Turn the Tide on Plastics put the spotlight on plastic waste in our seas for World Ocean Day.
Baines' most recent surreal photography event featured two dairy cows in the ocean at Henley South much to the bemusement of beachgoers!
Andrew's next spectacular free event takes place at the beachside suburb of Henley Beach on Sunday December 2 from 8am sharp.
Andrew says:"%%I would like to invite suited bowler hat wearing people to march along the beach from Henley Square to Joe's Kiosk, carrying ironic signs.
Also, I would like to invite dachshunds to participate but I would like them dressed as mini zebras, if possible.
The concept is that many of us live in such a privileged country yet we seem to moan and complain about insignificant things, when so much of the world is in turmoil where people are really suffering.
Carrying ironic signs shows how petty you can become if you don't look at the big picture. The Dachshunds are wearing zebra outfits because I can't source pigmy zebras%%."
Everyone in Adelaide is welcome to come and join in the Surreal Seaside Protest with artist Andrew Baines. On Sunday December the 2nd, meet at the northern grassed area of Henley Square, then join the crowd walking along the beach to reassemble at Joe's Kiosk.
Marchers should dress in all black and wear a bowler hat, bringing a sign is optional. If you can round up a Dachshund or two please bring them along, wearing a zebra outfit is optional for your fur babies. Shooting of the Surreal Seaside Protest will be complete by 9am.
Spectators are very welcome to come along to this free event. If you have any questions you can contact Andrew directly on his email
