If you have never tried surfing before or just want to escape from the crowded beach, drive along to the Spit .

Located approximately 2 km from the Sea World in Gold Coast, this place remains relatively undeveloped. If travelling from Brisbane, follow the signs to the Sea World and continue driving along this road until the end.

Being a part of the Gold Coast Seaway, the Spit is a unique engineering construction. There are two artificially made walls and underground pumping system to prevent erosion of the South Stradbroke Island and Gold Coast Broadwater.

These walls break strong ocean waves, creating one of the best spots for beginner's surfing in Gold Coast.

If you have never surfed before, the best way to do it is to take a lesson or two from the surf school. The experienced instructors who know this location like their backyard, will teach you beach safety, how to stand up on your board and help to catch your first wave.

Surf school will also provide you a special beginner's surfboard, which is more stable and safe. From my experience, every beginner is able to catch a wave and stand up after the first couple of hours, which is pretty cool. It is also important for beginners that there are not many people in the Spit, especially in winter, so you can master surfing skills without hitting someone's belly.

Whether you are doing it alone or with friends, surfing is great fun as well as a good workout. And do not forget to apply sunscreen and take watches off.
