On the opening of the new court buildings on William Street in 1884, The Age described the library as "the gem of the whole structure."

If you have never been inside this treasure, here is a chance to tour the magnificent Supreme Court Library, as the law librarian will take you around the first two floors of this historic building.

The Library of the Supreme Court is architecturally significant as one of Australia's most finely designed and executed public buildings. It is considered architect A E Johnson's finest work and was possibly modelled on the Dome of the Four Courts in Dublin. In fact, the Victorian Heritage Register and the Supreme Court Library are listed as having 201carchitectural, historical and social significance to the State of Victoria. 201d

Internally, the cylindrical plan with dome and the superb quality and design of the plaster finishes make the library one of the greatest of Melbourne's interior spaces.

This 30-minute tour will provide an introduction to the Library, highlighting its beautiful architecture, artwork, and historical collections.

Allow time to go through court security on arrival.

There are three dates for this FREE experience.
