Oh lordy, I love a dessert cafe. I think I've tried just about every cake at Greens & Co in Leederville, am a regular at chocolaterias, and switch over to ice creams and frozen yoghurts when summer heads back for its long stays in our sun-soaked capital.
So imagine my excitement when a good friend informed me that a new waffle place that had just opened in the William Street Arcade – can there be a more perfect baked dessert to help stave off the winter chill?
baked waffles practically lifts you off your feet and floats your down the wide walkway corridor to a bright and open shopfront cafe. Clean lines in warm pine and buttery wood tones encourage a welcoming atmosphere and the menu is enough to get you very excited about future return visits.
On this occasion, my friend chose what's sure to be a popular favourite, the Chocolate Waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It came with a shooter of melted chocolate and yes, one of the joys in life must be pouring chocolate all over a dessert you are just about to eagerly devour. Instant gratification!
I wanted something a little more out of the ordinary and chose the campfire inspired classic S'mores Waffle, and was rewarded with luscious squares filled with melting marshmallows generously sprinkled with finely grated peanuts. Extra cream and more marshmallows to the side definitely satisfied my sweet tooth.
Both desserts were accompanied by warm chasers of hot chocolate but a variety of coffees, teas, cold drinks and old fashioned milkshakes are also available as your beverage of choice.
Felix and Pei are the Nice People making these lovely treats and the cafe is quite a newbie on the block – upon asking for a business card, they informed us they had only been open a week! Within a cooee of the State Theatre (hungry audiences need a cafe close by so they can discuss shows animatedly over luxe sweet treats); I somehow don't think Superstar Waffles will remain an insider secret for very long.
A fun foodie delight to add to the reinvigoration of William St, wind down this nondescript arcade and discover a winter warmer worth waffling on about.
